    518 Screech in neutral

Yesterday while running around town, when I put my 518 in neutral it (or converter?) responded with a very loud screech. (I had a similar quite disturbing sound once in the past, but it turned out the flex plate bolts were rubbing on my dust cover, removed it and left it off.) I pulled off to...

    340 fuel/ignition issue?

340 with Thermoquad and MSD distr. with 6A box, recent plugs, good wires. In my last Thermoquad thread I was diagnosing fuel leaking into the intake. Turned out to be a leaky brass float which I got fixed. This was a #6518s that I had rebuilt not long ago. ('74 440 "Industrial".) Also I had...

    Thermoquad issue

I've been running a really well dialed in 440 TQ on my 340. I have an A/F meter on it, and keep an eye on the plugs. I have nothing but ultimate praise for the TQ!!! Once I finally figured out how to set up and adjust this carb, I find it much more tuneable and easy to tweak if necessary...

    440 Piston question

I have a friend who's building a 440 out of a truck, to go in a Chrysler 300. ...and he's asking about what caused this. I assume detonation??? Would anything else cause this?

    Quick TQ pull-off question

I've got my Thermoquad dialed in really nicely, great A/F #s all around, plugs are good. Timing curve is good. Yesterday I removed the air cleaner and watched the secondary air door open when blipping throttle quickly and the vacuum dropped. Today, the pull-off is preventing the door opening...

Ported X head 340 header size?

Hey All, just a question that some of you might have an opinion on. (there are some opinions here if I recall.) :D My 340 is pretty well sorted at this point, tuning etc. I have a true 9:1 motor, Lunati solid .526/.546 lift cam, port-matched LD340, big Thermoquad, etc. Cope built 518 OD...

    Thermoquad question

For anyone who might enjoy thinking about TQ's a bit... I have everything pretty dialed in, and TQ sorted to the point of good looking plugs and good numbers in general on my A/F meter. (Timing on the 340 is at 18/38 which gives best 1/4 MPH and the ignition curve is pretty worked out as...

MSD 6A battery kill switch wiring

This is probably one of those situations where I go "DUH!!" when I figure it out, but here's the question: Wanting to be NHRA legal, I have a 1/0 battery cable from the rear battery through a kill switch to the starter, then to the big post on the starter relay. I have the alternator charge...

    Who rebuilds Thermoquads?

I built a fresh TQ for my 340, and one more I’m selling for a ‘73-74 340, but now someone else is asking where they can get theirs rebuilt. I’m not intending to start doing more. Any tips as to who might be reliable?

    Timing Curve

Finally got warm enough that I got around to graphing my timing curve. 340 with MSD Ready-to-Run distributor, 2500 PTC converter, 4:10 gears. Right now timing is at 18/34, (may bump it a degree two.) I’m thinking maybe I should bring the curve in a little sooner???

    Tach for tuneups?

What is a good way to track RPM for tuneups? I have a good tach inside, and a good non-dial back timing light. Is there a decent handheld tach for a reasonable price? I have one of those old Actron tach/dwell meters, but it doesn’t have the RPM range to check total timing.

    Thermoquad on 340 (plug photos)

So I rebuilt a '73 Industrial TQ with 1-1/2" primaries. Walker kit from O'Reilly's, choke pull-off from Mikes. Sitting on a TQ adapter on LD340. (Cc'd 9:1 compression 340, headers, Lunati solid lifter cam, MSD ignition, etc.) I modified a set of rods to 67/52/42. Replaced .098 stock jets...

    How to modify Thermoquad rods

NOTE: PHOTOS WILL FOLLOW! i needed different rods than what was in my carb in order to fatten up the mix some. A 9000 series emissions era parts carb had some very lean rods which were 67/57/54 when measured. I modified them to 67/52/42. I found out that in my cheapy drill press (one of those...

    Thermoquad help questions

Hi All, I have rebuilt the TQ and using a Mr. Gasket spacer to my LD340 for now. I did a bunch of work this morning to the spacer, gasket, and some on the intake opening to get nice smooth accurate alignment. Should help some. But I have a couple of questions: 1) If I am not using a choke...

    Help dismantling ThermoQuad

following the Carter book step by step, removed all 10 screws, lifted top off. Book says carb phenolic resin bowl can now be lifted off the base. But it is very stuck. I won’t pry on it of course! I held it by the bowl and tapped on the corners of the base ...firmly but gently with small...

    Simple budget 318 recipe

Happened across this so thought I’d share. Down to earth, dirt cheap recipe for a reasonably strong street/strip 318 build. No nonsense, DIY and no hype, no sales pitch. Kinda fun approach and if I didn’t have my 340 this is what I’d be doing. Always liked my 318’s!! What do you guys think???

    Really? Edelbrock/Holley

THEY BOTH WORK JUST FINE, OK!!! I am posting this for no other reason than I want Edelbrock owners to not be plagued by that pesky little thought that sometimes pops up in the dark back corners of your mind, "...maybe I could gain just a teeny bit of power if I'd switch over and learn to tune...

Torque # For Iron Rocker Lock Nuts?

just did a road trip plus 1/8 mile fun drags. Had one adjuster shear off under the lock nut. Fortunately the nut/top of adjuster was sitting in the head! Machine shop had told me I needed 30 ft/lbs on the ARP lock nuts. I didn’t go that high, but what would recommend?? And who makes the...

    Effects of lash settings report

Had an interesting experience with a new cam and thought I'd share. No dyno, no clocks, so this is a seat-of-the-pants report. This is my first time running a performance solid lifter cam (so not counting my VWs and Slant 6s.) My 340 has ported iron X heads and as stated in other threads...
