413 is right. after checking it out a little closer it is a thin vinyl. Turns out that the previous owner painted over the tan, but its all kind of splotchy. how would you go about prepping the vinyl without ruining it? would a dye work now over what is paint?

If I adjust all of the end play out, I still have an up and down play in there. Could a bearing have seized from a previous owner and ruined the housing? I checked the O.D. of the race with a new one (with a micrometer) and they are the same.

I am trying to adjust my rear axle bearings in an 8-3/4. I find that i get an up and down play before I get any end play. Any help here would be appreciated.

One trick is to have someone block the exhaust at idle with a rag while listening for a change in the sound. That told me that my exhaust leak was at the manifold.

My mechanic neighbor mentioned a thicker gasket that would crush down unevenly so the manifold wouldn't crack and still seal - that was all discussion before finding out how easy it was to just sand flat.

Turned out to be no big deal. I got some belt sander belts from Harbor freight, screwed em to my bench, and dragged the manifold back and forth. It didn't take near as long as I would have thought and it is easy to keep flat doing it by hand.

Oh man. I need almost a sixteenth.

Thanks for all the replies. First time I've had the manifold off. It had a basic thin metal/composite gasket on it. I've heard that they didn't use gaskets from the factory. I think I'll see what some of those recommended shops say in the morning. If it's not too expensive .... Otherwise finding...

Yep - tapered bearings. Not Green. I have never had to adjust rear axle bearings before. Sorry for my ignorance. The manual shows the dial indicator measuring an in and out movement, but wouldn't that also slow for some up and down looseness?

Putting tires on my 67 Barracuda and I noticed up and down play on the passenger axle. The bearing feels fine and of course I can't do a visual without removing it, so I put new seals in and tried adjusting. In order to adjust any up and down slop out I don't get any end play. Is this a telling...
