    Front Shock Recommendation

I put some KYBs on my Duster and it raised the front end about 1/2 inch. I had to turn the adjusters back on the torsion bars to get back to initial ride height before installation.

    Problem Valve Spring!

I've never heard if one of the stamped steel rockers failing at that point where it's clearanced but my brother had a pushrod pop up through one of them using an oversized cam.

How many of your personal cars ended up in junkyards?

The one car I probably shouldn't have gotten rid of but it was in the 80s so I wasn't thinking about investment potential. I had a 1972 Demon 340 that I bought from a friend which had a spun bearing when I purchased it so I got a deal. I rebuilt the engine and drove it a while and the guy's...

    Comp's XE Cams

I put the Comp Cams Magnum Solid lift 270 duration 0.468" lift in my wife's Barracuda and it is a great street/strip cam. It as a little noisy but you expect that with solid lifters, but gobs of torque.

    360 cam question

I don't think you can fit much bigger than 2" to those early A manifolds. You have to use a tight fitting flange and barely flare the end so it doesn't bottom out and not seat on the raised cone. I used 2" for a couple of inches and transitioned to 2 1/4" kind of like step headers.

    360 cam question

Make sure you test fit the exhaust manifold on the driver's side. I used an early A manifold on a 360 and had to grind down the area of the head that juts out by the rear head bolt so the manifold would fit flush on the gasket surface area. Only about 1/8" of material needed to be removed to...

    Spark plug gaps

I run Autolite 65 plugs in my 340 car. It's a 10.3:1 compression w/cast iron heads. Still running the dual point. They last forever.

Do you let your old engine warm up or just get in and drive?

Back in high school my brother and I both had 340 cars. His was a Dart Swinger, mine was a Duster. Both were 4 speeds. I always liked to let mine warm up a little before revving it up and taking off. As soon as his Dart would fire up, he would romp down hard on it three or four times and I was...

    Hays Street/Strip Clutch 85-301

I ended up going with the McLeod diaphragm clutch with organic disc. It holds good but I don't like the pedal feel. It gives resistance at first and then gets easy to push the rest of the way down even though I have removed the over center spring on the pedal. It doesn't suit me for power...

Advice vs pros and cons of engine flush

If it only tics a few seconds, it would seem to me that's just lifter tick until the oil pressure gets to the lifters. I personally would avoid flushing if there's no visible gunk buildup in the valve covers.

    No oil to top end

I bought a parts car that had a 360 in it. It had broken the oil pump drive and lost oil pressure. The owner stopped before damage to the rest of the engine. I tore it down and opened up the oil pump. One of the lock wire springs had come out of a lifter and was jammed up in the rotor of the...

    No oil to top end

After I spun my first rod bearing with the stock pan on my 340 Duster back in the seventies, I have been going with deep pans and HV pumps ever since. I've never had another spun bearing (knock on wood).

    No oil to top end

Let us know what brands they were so we can be wary of their pumps. I got a TRW pump many years ago that was supposed to be a HV pump and I noticed when I stuck the oil pump drive in it to turn it before installing it that the shaft could move in and out about an eighth of an inch. I think they...

    No oil to top end

My brother had a 340 block that the passages from the camshaft to the top of the block got stopped up with sludge and wouldn't pump oil to the rocker shafts. We realized it when the rocker arms started squeaking and pulled the valve covers. He decided it was time for a rebuild and took it to a...

    Trying to understand Manifold choices

The RPM is a good intake but check the runners for casting shift and gasket match it. I had to correct one for a friend of mine's 360 Challenger. One side was right but the other side was about 3/32" off if I recall correctly.

    No oil to top end

I've found that if you take a 1/8" inch welding rod and beat all the flux off and clean it up good, bend it 90 degrees about the last 1/2" and bend about a 3 inch 90 degree handle on the other end, you can get the short bent end under the gear and put a lot of pull on that intermediate shaft to...

    Possible rod knock?

I had a knock that I thought was a rod knock on a 340 once and found out it was a cracked vibration damper hub. It had cracked in the keyway and had opened up just slightly but was enough to make the knocking noise.

    Wanting to Know Camshaft Specs.

Thanks Bewy. I thought it came out of a drag race car. Seems like the car had a tunnel ram and two fours on a 340 but that's been several years back. A little too radical for any projects I have in the foreseeable future.

    Wanting to Know Camshaft Specs.

I got this camshaft some time back and have never used it because I didn't know the specs and haven't been able to find them on any searches I've done with my limited computer knowledge. If anyone has an old cam chart for this camshaft, I would greatly appreciate it if you could post it.

    Wheel hop. 68 383 4 spd

I used to have Lakewood "Traction Action" traction bars on my 4 speed Duster and never had any wheel hop with the snubbers up against the front eye of the spring like Dave999 said.

    Clutch Linkage

I decided to pull the automatic out of my Dart and put in an overdrive four speed for fun highway driving since the car was originally a stick car. I put a 75209 McLeod clutch in it and at first hadn't removed the over center spring. The clutch pedal seemed to go down easier after about a third...

    Wheel hop. 68 383 4 spd

When I was running street class with my Dart, I ran a modified pinion snubber with 245/60r-14 street tires because I had read about the Wedge cars like Lefty71 mentioned above and was out 60 footing cars with drag radials. I had it set to where it was tight up against the bottom of the car. It...

    Thermoquad questions

I had to install a heavier spring on the air door of mine on a 340 with .528 solid cam to prevent bogging with a 4 speed. I kept tightening the original until I almost had the bog out and the original spring broke. I got the heavier spring out of one of those assorted spring blister packs at the...

Do green bearings move the wheel out?

I've never seen any difference. I have seen on this forum where it was said you couldn't use green bearings in an old tapered axle housing but I put an 8 3/4 housing out of a 1963 Fury in a 1974 Duster using flange type axles and the green bearings work fine in it.

    727 shifting in drag race??

I let my Dart shift on it's own with a governor out of a Dodge Colt for higher shift points. I adjusted it to shift at 6200 rpm and could have gone higher but I wanted to take it easy on my engine. I figured letting it shift on it's own would be more consistent than me shifting it.

exhaust pipe diameter for a mildly modified 340

I wonder if anyone has done a study on decibels of loudness between the different size exhaust using the same mufflers for the given size so you could get apples to apples comparison. That could also be a deciding factor for some of us older folks that don't like too much noise anymore but still...
