How to fix ring and gear pattern?

you need to move the drive pattern up on the gear , you have too much toe ( towards inner part of tooth ) in the pattern so you have to subtract from the shim thickness , take out .003 from the pinion shim thickness and try again and keep doing that until you arrive at a proper pattern. you will...

What are you using for 8 3/4 pinion seal?

when you do find these antique leather seals and you want to use them , you are supposed to soak them in the oil used in the application e.g. rear axle fluid for differential seals and engine oil for rear main side seals or timing cover seals before installing the seal , this allows the leather...

    Spider gears

why do you want to change from 2.93 to 2.76 gear , only about 180 rpm's difference ,, really not worth the time or the money to do it.

    8 3/4 Gear pattern

for a used gear set the pattern is right on ,, should be no issues if you had to run it ,,, but why someone would grind on the pinion that way is beyond any reasonable reason , save the shim under the pinion head bearing for your next set up , add this gear set to your scrap bin.

    Currie 9” Rear-end

by chance was the axle overfilled with gear oil ,, had a similar issue with a rebuilt complete 9 inch axle i sold , all seals were leaking , turned out the customer overfilled the the unit ,,, not the 5 pints required. pull the fill plug with the car level to see if any leaks out. if not check...

    Early 7.25 Pinion Preload Shims

the early 7.25 axle you have uses pinion bearing preload shims that ranged from 0.074 - 0.106 which are pretty much obsolete now - closest shim pack is for a Dana 44 used in Jeep applications which have an O.D. of 1.450 and an I.D. of 1.140 so you would have to open up the I.D. a bit. this...

    Gear Pattern Opinions Please

your gear pattern is perfect ,, leave it alone ,, every 8.8 i've ever done using Ford factory gears rolls the same type pattern when set up correctly. as long as your pinion bearing preload is correct as well as your carrier bearing preload you are good to go. total width of both carrier...

    Fresh third member setup question

yes a properly rebuilt differential will have some resistance when turning ,, this is due to the preload on the pinion bearings as well as the preload on the carrier bearings ,, your gear pattern is perfect leave it alone ,, your backlash is on the low side but after you make a few runs it...

    (489) 3.23:1 to 3.55:1

for the 300 rpm difference between 3.23 and 3.55 gear set i do not think it is worth the time or money to change i do not think you will feel the difference , now going to maybe a 3.73 gear and you have made enough rpm difference to feel it. as far as gear company to go with see September 26...

    Do I have a sure-grip or not?

one other thing to consider is it could be an open diff with the spider gears welded to the cross pin due to lack of lubrication -- abuse at some point in its life -- seen this too many times pull the diff to confirm what you have to be sure ,, its 50+ years old time to look.

Dana 60 SVL vrs Dana Spicer gear set

don't want to be a bearer of bad news but your Dana gear pattern on the coast side shown in the photo looks to be way off , hope you corrected it before running that gear ,drive and coast pattern should be more like these shown on these 8-3/4 diffs i've done recently.

    Axle Vent

do this leave the bolt holding the brass brake fitting in place -- move over a couple inches and drill and tap a hole for the 7/16 -20 thread -- go to the junk yard and take a wobble cap vent off any 8.8 in the yard ( 9/16 wrench needed to remove vent from housing ) -- when you drill the hole...

    8 3/4" sure-grip swap and rebuild questions

your pattern is favoring the heel part of the gear on the drive side , not the best as under load the gear will walk even higher off the ring gear ,,add another .003 at a time to the pinion shim to bring the pattern down check the pattern again add more shim if necessary ,,i read all the posts...

    741 gears

    742 case front race HM803110 is 3.500 O.D. ,, bearing cone HM803149 is 1.750 I.D. ,,741 Case front race HM89410 is 3.000 O.D. ,, bearing cone HM89446 is 1.375 I.D. -- so you are going to need a pretty big hammer to fit a 742 gear in a 741 case.

    741 gears

742 gears will NOT fit into a 741 case -- i do not know of any bearing you could use to do this conversion let alone the dimensional differences in the pinion itself between the 742 and 741 cases -- yokes will interchange ,, i just went thru a very nice early 657 case ( same as 741 ) with an...

    8 3/4 489 gear pattern reading

make your pinion depth shim changes in .003 increments -- you are so close at .045 -- looks good as far as contact pattern on the drive side ( maybe a little low on the toe ) ,,coast side looks ok ,,so take .003 out go to .042 shim this should bring the drive side pattern up a bit to match the...

    8.25” Axle Bearing Sleeve

you can buy a repair bearing such as Timken TRP1559TV or SKF R1559 -- it places the rollers in the bearing on the unworn area of the axle shaft ,, on the 8.25 check the O.D. of the axle (area where the bearing rides) as well as the O.D. of the bearing itself to get the correct repair bearing ...

    8 3/4" How Strong?

go with the 9 inch Ford , again as stated parts availability , strength ,gear ratios in increments of 10 to help tune your car for the track you are on ,,, the Dana has its place but gear ratio selection is very limited and gear changes can be time consuming .
