with some of the newer paint codes out now it is impossible to get a 100% paint match as some paint codes today can have a half doz or more alternates just in one paint code.
i was mixing paint for years also, trying to get a paint match for a partial or even a complete nowadays is a fricking...

dtm clears have less shrinkage than reg urethanes, cleared my ironhead chop rocker boxes yr's ago with dtm with no issues also.
alsa also has a DTM clear now too...

for the op, we have been clearing bare metals with diffrent products (creacote,armorex,cloverdale) for years, some are better than others, we have found the DTM (direct to metal) cloverdale 4:1 polyurethane one of the better ones...
