I have a good used manual steering box from my 1967 Barracuda. Worked fine, I just replaced with a quick ratio box 5-6 years ago when I rebuilt the suspension and steering.

What happens is once there is a groove or worn area , then the shoes will hang up and not return with the spring pressure when the wheel cylinder retracts.
You can file ( rotary file, grinder, dremel, etc ) to smooth the pads. Add a small amount of anti-seize or brake lube to the pads. (small amount). I've never seen or heard of anyone replacing the backing plates because the pads were worn.

I have a Holley aluminum heat shield and 1/2” phenolic spacer for 4 barrel carbs.
Works great in hot environments. I bent it slightly to give additional clearance for coolant hose. Could be straightened, trimmed or left as is.
