Thinking about checking out this 65 Barracuda

the fender tag decodes as a formula s comando 4 speed car. Red exterior, black interior and black stripe. i would be concerned that the fender tag is a different color and appears bent. could be from a different car. Could be a formula s clone and someone took the fender tag off a formula s...

    340 with edelbrock heads overheating

harland sharp makes a rocker specifically for these heads will be using those first. I think the valves are hanging open a little bit because after checking and checking and finding no vacumne leak its got to be this. I think the added friction is causing it. there is one valve that no matter...

    340 with edelbrock heads overheating

I agree, the heads are running cooler than the block. I think i found the problem. Funny thing is i did this same swap 12 years ago and used 273 rockers. had zero problems. no longer have the car so edelbrock changed something or i got lucky last time

    340 with edelbrock heads overheating

its not my maturity level that is the issue, you really need to look in the mirror, I never said it was overheating with the x heads.

    340 with edelbrock heads overheating

Thanks Rusty, I think i figured out to not run it again. This may or may not be the problem. Yeah you did insult me but you also insulted everyone who made comments on this post too. Reason being is I mentioned the 273 rockers on the initial post. No-one mentioned that those could be the...

    340 with edelbrock heads overheating

ok update. i overooked on the edelbrock instructions where it says the adjustible stock rockers will hit the sping retainers. Well sure enough I could see where the stock 273 rockers hit the sping retainers. I tried a differnt carb with no effect what so ever on the idle mixture screws. They do...

    340 with edelbrock heads overheating

ok, got it back togeher . same thing is happening. one thing i did while playing around trying to figure what the heck is going on is i disconnected the pvc at the carb . the idle increased. Then i took it off at the valve cover while still plugged into carb, it did not like that. When i...

    340 with edelbrock heads overheating

ok, got the heads checked out. They were both bowed. He had to take out .6000 off each head. Keep in mind the heads never got hotter than 215 or so based on my ir gun. so it may have been warped heads the entire time. not sure how much these heads can take in terms of heat but this was a very...

    340 with edelbrock heads overheating

ok, checked then rechecked the cam and it is good each time comes back at 105.5. it does not appear to be the cam. Heads are at the engine builder he is going to make sure there are no problems with those. If all is good will slap everything back together. Then have an excorsism to remove the...

ok did first cam degree attempt. came back at 105.5 so that's good. Will try again to see if it replicates. If good then i am good with the cam.

    340 with edelbrock heads overheating

so you have seen it where the intake lifter is higher than the exhaust and everything was fine. The cam grider guy i spoke with did not leave me with alot of confidence. Either he did not understand my question or did not want to tell me i messed up. They are a very reputable cam grinder so...

    340 with edelbrock heads overheating

Thanks for the photos. so matter what type of cam you have, unless you are trying to do it on purpose the lifters should be even . This may have been the cause of my overheating problem.

    340 with edelbrock heads overheating

hi everyone. sorry out of town for the week. no computer with me just my phone and i cant really see the writing on my phone. I agree i never use sealant but the engine builder did , so i did i was just trying to copy him will not use any next time. In the mean time I have spoken to the cam...

    340 with edelbrock heads overheating

ok, i feel like a dumb a@@, but thats nothing new. So my Dad came over and looked at what I had going on. He said the valve did not hit the piston. The pistons are stock or stock style 72-73 340 those are alignment marks so the piston goes in the correct orientation. So I searched the web and...

    340 with edelbrock heads overheating

i measured the push rod length and its 7.5. so i am good there. my thinking now is its cam timing and may have been like this prior and the edelrock valves hit again bending valves. not sure how i did not have the over heating problem before. i am going to be incredibly pissed if both heads have...

    340 with edelbrock heads overheating

ok, thanks everyone for your responses. The weird thing is not every cylinder has the issue where the valve hit the piston. Some are the exhaust valve some are the intake. Some pistons have a lighter impression than others. Wouldn't if the cam was installed wrong this would happen to all the...

    340 with edelbrock heads overheating

picture attached . top shows where the valve hit the piston. I actually cannot say if this happened with the edelbrock heads or the iron heads as I was not looking for a problem when i took the iron heads off.

    340 with edelbrock heads overheating

ok, took off the heads, what i found was very discouraging. Appears some of the valves hit the pistons. Not sure after i checked and rechecked clearance. Well this motor is toast. Does explain why the idle mixture screws would not do anything. Likely bent the vales too.

the ir gun actually reads higher. so if the gauge is at 210, the gun is at about 220-240 where the sender goes in at the intake

took thermostat out . ran the car with out radiator cap. heated up again over 210 and rising. Coolant flow looked great, i did see lots of bubbles. I am thinking I have exhaust in the coolant. Cant think of what else it could be at this point. btw, its not the radiator, it was doing the same...

    340 with edelbrock heads overheating

i already used the ir gun, multiple times. it confirmed engine is getting hot, got 240 at the intake manifold 178 or so on the lower hose. radiator is doing its job. something else is causing the heat.
