Someone check my stupid please... valve springs

Wow, I think you are getting way off track. Who assembled the heads on the first get go? You or a machine shop that knows what to do? You have not mentioned rocker to valve tip. The valve springs and retainers need to be purchased as per cam specs. Your problem is you need to set the push rod...

Engine builders...this machining cost sound excessive?

Building a motor is not cheap. There's no way you cleaned that block as good as he can. Do you even own a set of bottle brushes? Do you think the cam bearings are ok? Why not spend that little bit of money to make them correct? Painting it is a good idea. And paint it again after assembly. If...

    Brake Shoes

Well in the OLD days a riveted set of Bendix was about the best you could buy. Nice firm pedal. Bonded shoes were crap. So tell me, can you still buy riveted shoes? What is your thoughts riveted or bonded? I have a spongy pedal. New bonded shoes. Soft, bad pedal.

    8.75 suregrip gear swap questions

YES.....Yes, Mark them. Center punch maybe 1-1 on one cap, one side. Then 2-2 on one side of the other cap. Ring gear bolts are left hand but I never seen main cap bolts that were. Save all shims to use as a starting point.

    Bolt length

They are most definitely different lengths. Most important is some go into the water jacket and require a good "HIGT TEMP THREAD SEALLER". @ 3 o clock !!!!
