    Any guide cutter you like?

Thanks for the input. I did my heads yesterday and the Howard’s worked fine. Sneaked up on the measurement I needed on the first one, set a depth stop for my drill off that one and the other fifteen were done in minutes. Used CRC on one head, nothing on the other. Couldn’t tell any difference...

    1970 Swinger 340 resto

Not much to update but some slow progress. Got the valve job with a 70 degree throat cut and one head blended into the bowl. Gasket matched with radius of the pushrod pinch to the straight port wall. Still more work to do around the guide bosses and clean up the chambers a bit more. Guide cutter...

    Any guide cutter you like?

Oops, I actually ordered .530 seals. I went back and edited my post. Thanks. I didn’t see any .531 seals at Summit so I thought.001 would make them tighter and not particularly hard to install. Any experience with that? I went with the Howard cutter because the mandrel came with it.

    Any guide cutter you like?

Thanks anyway guys; I just ordered the Howards .531 cutter and Manley .530 Viton seals. Feel free to speak up if you don’t like these or the combination.

    Any guide cutter you like?

I got my valve job done and did some measurements today. I’m going to have to cut the guides down to make proper clearance between keepers and seal. I want to do it myself rather than take it back to the machine shop. I know there are cutter’s available from cam companies and from Goodson. Is...

Big Valve X Heads on Low Comp 72 340

I had some 2.02 valves put in a J head years ago. Same casting? Yes, but my machinist didn’t do the work the X head came with. I’m taking my J heads I’ve been reworking after reading and watching DV to get a proper throat cut. Here are three pictures; two of the stock X head and J with the half...

    CAM HELP NEEDED!

Comp Cams has a valve timing tutorial available with a diagram I printed off to help me figure out valve timing events. You can take the duration (total) and the installed angle to get the ABDC closing. It will be the installed angle plus one-half the duration minus 180. For example with my cam...

Torque plates and gen good machine shop

I’m finishing my 360 as is that was already honed without a plate. For my next build which is a 340, I’m going to use either the shops on Columbus, Ohio or the shop in Dandridge TN a member on here told me about, with plate.

Torque plates and gen good machine shop

I can appreciate that. I could get more done after work that I can now with all day to do it. But the good part is, I’m getting to do the things I want to do instead of what I have to do.

Torque plates and gen good machine shop

Yeah, wish I could spend more time in my shop. Backs out right now from digging out and clearing the septic tank line down at the church; but I can still manage to get a bare block into the back of my truck. I just do a little at a time.

Heard that! I took my sons, their family and friends out for tacos and told them just put what they wanted on my tab. There went a torque plate sized bill. LOL

No sorry; I meant did you do honing for others or if the plate was for your personal use only.

Torque plates and gen good machine shop

No, it will not be a race engine at all; just street and occasional strip. Into the 12s will be great for me. The current 360 build I’m finishing has piston clearances all over the place from .00175 to as much as .00425 after honing rust out of it. That’s not the build I wanted a torque plate...

I remember Ed Hamburger. Yeah, good to have had those. Do you do for others?

Unfortunately, Bo Beverly passed away about a month ago. Another racing legend gone. When I called before; he was in the hospital and today I found he was gone. I missed the chance to make that visit. Some speculation his son may carry on the business but the phone is discontinued at present.

What’s this strap for on the manual transmission hump

I see I am not alone in this marriage thing. But;… I’m just glad she would have me.

What’s this strap for on the manual transmission hump

I have to make my wife comfortable or ride alone. Next guy can put the bench back in if he wants to. It’s not like back in the day when she rode in the middle. We’re married 51 years now.

What’s this strap for on the manual transmission hump

Might do me some good down the road if I put the bench back in but I’m planning to try some six way power, heated and cooled buckets out a a Nissan Maxima. I accept all chastisement for such blasphemy.

    1970 Swinger 340 resto

It’s been a while since I gave an update. Things went slow over the winter for lack of shop time. I spent about a month just getting a Harbor Freight blasting cabinet together with its million screws. It works good when I switched from walnut shells to sand. Still need to add more light. After...

    head milling

From Larry Shepard’s book; How To Build Max Performance from small block Mopar: .010 mill on open chamber heads removed 2.08 cc. For .010 mill from head deface mill .0095 from intake side of head and .0144 from the china wall of block. Of course if you don’t mill too much you can use rtv...

    Speedometer number location

I just figured out what Professor fate was showing me. I misread instructions again. I’ve got 37 teeth on the gear so clocked it accordingly. Thanks for the help.

    Speedometer number location

Finishing up my A833 rebuild and need the speedometer number to clock the cable in the transmission. I have the Speedo in my hand but where do I look for the number. All I see right now are some partially rust obscured printing on the back of the face.

    Swap pistons for quench?

That’s a valid idea. Thanks for the input. We’ll see. Right now I’m taking time out to read Vizard’s books before my next step on the engine. I’ve got plenty to do otherwise. Just finished buttoning up my four speed and I’ve got the heads to finish.
