    Slant 6- Idle and Running

SUCCESS!!!! pishta offered up some parts including a carb and timing cover with tab... I couldn't help but think it was my economizer problem with this mangled body... which happens to be a check valve that's one of the more important parts of the fuel circuit on these 1920s... Well, I took...

    Slant 6- Idle and Running

Well...No :D (actually I haven't checked but I'm guessing not lol). The mechanism was rotating on the shaft.

Yes I know this story, except for their penetrate version. For something that doesn't penetrate or lubricate, it does a surprising job at both though (the multi-use version).

Thank you for your reply BillG. I blew out every orifice with air during my rebuild but I also found some pretty badly damaged parts during the rebuild too. It's interesting seeing the full history of someone going through all the carb problems. I hear that the reman ones are awful so I figured...

    That's because it's a 72 car, not a 74

Could the heat riser be related to my problems of not starting warm... Maybe stuck open and heating the intake, the fuel and the carb? It is meant to be closed at temp?

    Slant 6- Idle and Running

Tested various things... Here is a video and photos. https://photos.app.goo.gl/gn1vTHGx7Rx93haW6 The video shows the timing mark moving. I tested my timing light, it is working fine on my 4.7 and my wifes car. My damper can't be moving as it wouldn't be lined up to tdc every time right? The...

I'll check distributor gear, but it's rotating normally, all are firing and in order. It would have to be slipping somehow and then fixing itself for inspection. If the gear is not engaged I'd expect some other symptoms than struggling to run when warm right?

    Slant 6- Idle and Running

The rotor in the position shown is right where it was wired for cylinder 1 on the cap. Distributor vacuum is capped off during the timing test, though it does the same either way. Could be my timing light I suppose. The physics of a timing situation where cylinder 1 is firing in various...

    Slant 6- Idle and Running

Thank you to those sticking around and offering help!! I cleaned out a rebuilt the carb... no change. :( Two things I found on my journey... one is that the fuel line going into the carb is slightly kinked, I can't see this being my problem as I can still rev to my hearts content and it gets...

    Slant 6- Idle and Running

Thats crazy, is that because you have a 76 or a newer Valiant? I figured that my 72 was exempt with the cut off so I could get rid of everything if needed, but I also know laws have been changed since I was last in this game. I do know my 72 is full of crappy smog equipment that they tried in...

    Slant 6- Idle and Running

I won't lie, you got me pretty excited there, the prospect of a single bolt fixing my problem... i jumped out of my seat! Unfortunately I don't have any vacuum pressure at that hole and it doesn't seem to go anywhere. I plugged it with a bolt anyway and unfortunately there was no change, purrs...

That's perfect, thank you. I have enough to go on now to make my own out of cardboard, ha!

    360 and lots of questions

With those motor mounts, will you still need a v8 k frame or center link? Center Link V8 This seems to suggest its not needed, as does your post. Just double checking. Maybe just needs shimming up for oil pan clearance.

    Slant 6- Idle and Running

The fuel leaked directly around where it connects to the block. Old oil was checked, no gas in it. Changed the oil again, no gas in it. Changed the fuel pump, it didn't have a gasket but that wouldn't affect it if the diaphragm was ruptured. Who knows where that leak was coming from, it wasn't...

    Slant 6- Idle and Running

UPDATE, my journey continues... If you read this and something stands out, please yell at me to check something. This car is kicking my *** ha but its fun. I get short windows to work based on looking after a 3 year old. I only get a few minutes to diagnose things when running since it wont run...

    Slant 6- Idle and Running

Here's where everything was going, for whatever this is. Im assuming OSAC based on what that does and where it is positioned. Edit: Is this the OSAC valve? - Slant Six Forum this explains what it is. It is a CA car. I wonder if it still has anything to do with my problems though.
  18. S

    Slant 6- Idle and Running

I did not unplug it no, just bypassed it's vacuum lines. I wasn't even sure it was the OSAC and can find almost no information on it. Should I?
  19. S

    Slant 6- Idle and Running

Well the plot thickens... Two photos attached (One is the thing I bypassed, one is the awful intake manifold connection) I disconnected this (sits on top of the valve cover, it is OSIC? My slant is a 72 so I'm not sure what it is), but it had a hose disconnected anyway (the one pointing...

    Slant 6- Idle and Running

Well I may end up taking you up on that offer! Im in Mission Viejo so pretty close. I have a rebuild kit on its way so I will start with a thorough clean and rebuild first. Yep, with the choke actuated slightly, it'll idle all day.
  21. S

    Slant 6- Idle and Running

Since I can now make changes with the car on, any change to the fast idle screw seems to cause it to stall, and by that token, any manual change to the choke causes it to stall. I'm still getting strong fuel odor.To be clear then, I am setting the fast idle cam with a cold motor and the engine...

    Slant 6- Idle and Running

Ok thank you for that photo, that I have tried to do but I feel like there is a lot of play in where the fast idle cam sits on the idle screw. I will try to get a video to show what I mean, but it may well be normal. Am I doing this adjustment with the car running? I've been trying to set fast...

    Slant 6- Idle and Running

UPDATE I focused on the economizer plate, following pishta's advice. Cleaned everything out (it was gross, so I'm guessing a rebuild is still needed). The car fired up and idled great, enough for me to do some tweaks. Now allows me to throttle up and sounds great! Thank you pishta!! That's the...

    Slant 6- Idle and Running

Ha, well that comment went down a treat. I'll try to find some time to do valve lash. I'll get back to you all when that is done and we'll see. Thanks again! ...ordering a blowtorch now.

    Slant 6- Idle and Running

Thank you all, I have a few things to try then. Thank you Dan for the resources, the 1920 guide was exactly what I was looking for. I can do valves but I see it needs a nicely warmed up engine to be accurate, I can't really get there (I get about a minute). The car purrs when I have it on the...

    Slant 6- Idle and Running

I've read through a number of people with similar issues but mine seems to be slightly different, I apologize if anyone thinks it was too close to other peoples questions... The Car is a 72 Duster with 225, 1920 carb, just been picked up. I am trying to diagnose without throwing too many parts...
