Not 100% sure, but having a 72 tail panel allows the use of 800cfm TQ and intake ,along with a 904 trans in stock class on a 70.

This is problem I had. My 383 was sucking oil through the valley pan. And like Moper said even a small amount of oil will cause detonation. Thats why I asked about reading the plugs, try to find signs of it burning oil.

What kind of spark plugs are you running? How do they read? Are they fouled? I am going through a similar problem with the 383 in my Road Runner. The problem ended up being a vacuum leak in the intake valley pan. Recheck yours carefully. Does your vacuum guage hold steady at idle or is it moving...

No, the input shaft bearing is larger in diameter on the O/D gearset and will not fit in a standard iron case. To get the ratios you want 2.66:1 1st gear and have O/D you would have to use the Passon Performance 18 spline gear set. It fits a standard 23 spline case. The conversion kit cost...

No you can't switch the ratios around like that. The main cluster gear is one piece and will not allow you to mix and match ratios from a diifferent trans.

Remove one or both of the valve covers to check how clean inside it is along with condition of valve train etc.

Put the rear bumper on and place some weight in the trunk , about 150lbs to simulate a full tank of gas,battery in the trunk etc. Also what is the angle of the rear shackle?

You might want to try and look for an A998 or A999. They're the same as a 904 but have the lower 1st gear set.

What cylinder heads up plan on running? Race or pump gas?They don't list any piston choices for different heads or compression ratios. And at that pirce you could also get kits from Muscle Motors, 440 Source etc. and have your choice of pistons. Here's an example...

It's a 68 or 69. With the 307 engine badges on it I believe it's a 69. Not 100% sure.
