How to Pick Your own CamShaft better.

As 273 says, driveability is a personal thing. I've been lucky enough to use a few different cams and know how they performed in my builds.

How to Pick Your own CamShaft better.

Picking the cam is best left to the pros at Ultradyne, Comp or any of the major companies. The problem is most guys want lots of HP...and they get a cam that makes big hp but at high rpm where they never drive. I've found most good quarter mile builds are no fun driven on the street.

Duster Breaks FAST Small Block Record

Anything goes in "FAST" class as long as it uses stock tires and looks stock. Many of those cars are over 700 hp.

    Cam help

i don't think you'll ever find a stock 340 with more than about 9.5:1 compression. For a streeter you might not want to go above about 220 degrees of duration.

    Exhaust for a 1969 340 Swinger

To answer your question...i have used 1 of their exhaust systems and it was fine. I just bought another for my current build but have not installed it yet. Their new system is even better with some adjustabilty, and as you are aware are very reasonably priced! You can buy much more expensive...

    Headers vs 340 manifolds

AJ's post explains why the stock 340 cam is not big enough to benefit much from headers. A good post that illustrates how and why, and the dyno numbers confirm this. A stock 340's components were well matched and made for a great street performer.

    Headers vs 340 manifolds

If you were able to increase a stock 340 by 15hp by adding headers, could you feel the additional 15 hp in a 3600lb. car?

    Headers vs 340 manifolds

A 3/4" cam can be effective on a circle track that is as big as 1 mile as long as you stay in the inside lane. Couldn't resist guys....I think i've been in this hobby too long!
  12. ir3333

    Headers vs 340 manifolds

3/4 cam is actually a little smaller than a 13/16 cam which was used on the larger 13/16 mile circle track.
  13. ir3333

    Headers vs 340 manifolds

headers on a stock 340 through mufflers aren't going to gain anything noticeable. 3/4 cam was a cam ground specifically for the rpm operating range on 3/4 mile stock car track which would have no low rpm requirement....or maybe a cam with 12 lobes?

    Anybody running 276 gears?

I am no cam expert but that cam might not start making power until 3000 rpm. 2.76:1 rear gears may not be the best fit with your stock converter. There are guys on the forum that can give you some direction.
  15. ir3333

    Anybody running 276 gears?

lots of good info....but your cam, torque converter and tire size will determine your lo end torque. a High performance 360 doesn't really tell the guys with experience enough.

AJ...what cam have you installed in these cars to require a converter that stalls at 2800 rpm. My last build was a stock low compression 340 dart with 1.88" intake valves and a small 204/214 melling replacement cam with 3.23 rear gears. Launching with care would pin you in your seat to well...

    Diff gear recommendations

I hated 3.55's and higher. What most don't realize is that cruising on the highway at 2800 isn't really much on paper compared to 2500 but it is in the car. The increased rpm includes the fan, water pump, fuel pump, alternator, power steering pump, oil pump, crankshaft, camshaft, distributor...

    Diff gear recommendations

I have used high stall converters and they will provide lo end tire spin but that's about it and for me the novelty wore off for street use. They are no fun driving on hilly or curvy roads at speeds. It's a learning experience and a constant battle driving through them which i grew to dislike...

    Diff gear recommendations

Your cam may be too big for lo end street performance and your rear tires too tall. A stock style cam and stock rims / tires will probably get you what you want This will pin you in your seat from 1000 rpm to well past highway speeds with 3.23 gears, be a blast to drive and probably get 20 mpg...

Are there any experienced beer drinkers here?

Are there any experienced beer drinkers here?

I enjoyed most of them for years but preferred European style beer. My Buddy said you only taste the first one and can get used to anything. He was right because when i started drinking cheap beer i hated it, but after a few weeks it was my favourite. I eventually just got tired of buying it...

    Are you a picky eater

Yup...but not what you would think. I try to avoid sugars and unhealthy snacks. Try to eat for nutrition. If you eat for pleasure a lot of it will be unhealthy and you'll overeat. Most would find my diet bland or awful but i'm used to it now so it's normal for me.
