How Much HP Can a 8 3/4 Handle?

Yes. The original owner of my car sank cubic dollars into that 383 in 1970. He put $1,200 in the heads alone which is huge money in 1970 dollars. That short 383 stroke can wind up something fierce. The thing revs as freely as any small block but makes big block HP and torque. I love it. No need...

How Much HP Can a 8 3/4 Handle?

I was stunned to find out that the reason my car has a Dana in it is that the original owner broke the crap out of the original 8¾ with a 383. He said he twisted the axles and grenaded the posi. It had 12.1 to 1 compression, maxed-out 906 heads, a roller cam, two Holley 650s, and no NOS or...

    8-3/4 or Ford 9 inch???

One other problem with the Ford 9 inch: because of the angle of the pinion, which is less than ideal, there is a power loss with a 9 inch. If you check the power at the wheels on a dyno and then swap in an 8¾ or a Dana and check it again you will find that the 8¾ and Dana deliver more power to...

    8-3/4 Vs Dana60 Vs 9" Rear

If you do not want to sacrifice some power the 9" is out. If the 8.75 will handle your setup (they are strong) use it, if not, use the Dana.

    8-3/4 Vs Dana60 Vs 9" Rear

The Dana will fit in a A Body with no problem. I have one in mine. Because of it's design, the 9 inch eats up more power than a Dana or an 8¾. I would go with the Dana.

    A body Dana 60

This may sound strange but the heavier Dana my actually help make the car quicker because if there is one place a nasty A-body needs a weight increase it is in the rear where it can help the car hook better.

Gear ratio / RPMs at speed

An amazing but true story... Back when the Lenco trans first hit the track a lot of guys were switching over to it. Ronnie Sox (Mr. 4-speed) did and it actually slowed him down. He ran better times with his 4-speed.

Yes, but I have a 4-speed. No slop in my drivetrain.

Gear ratio / RPMs at speed

I have a question for anyone that has a big block (especially 383) 4-speed car with 4.10s. I am thinking of pulling my 3.54's and going to 4.10's since I really do not do much highway driving. What RPM do you turn at 60-65 MPH and how tall are your tires?

    Dana 60 gear change

Yes, but this is one of those rare occaisions where adding weight will probably make the car faster. With a big block A Body, adding weight to the rear end will probably make the car faster because if you add enough weight to the back it may gain some chance of hooking up a little without 10...

    Dana 60 gear change

You should not have that problem if you have 4.10's. You should already have the right carrier to go to 3.54's. You will only have that problem if those 4.10's turn out to be 4.30's. You will like 3.54 as a street gear. That 440 has more than enough torque to launch an A Body and running on the...

    Dana 60 gear change

I went from 5.38's to 3.54's about 10 years ago. Awesome street gear. I hope you do not run into the surprise that I did. My dana had the large carrier because of the steep gears so I had to find a small carrier to go below 4.30's. But that was not the surprise. The surprise was that it had the...
