Would I need to take the axles out or could they do it while they are still in the unit?

I have an 8 3/4 with a 5 on 4 bolt pattern, and was wondering if there is anyway to change it to a 5 on 4.5, without changing the axles? Or if there is a link somewhere which might help me I would gladly appreciate it. The search came up with nothing in the forums.

For a 318 that is going to be a street/strip car, with around 350 horses to the wheels, should I go with the a833 aluminum O/D, or the cast non O/D? I am not concerned with gas mileage at all, I just want it to get up and go.
