Derale 727 pan ground clearance question?

I'm running the Derale on my 68 Cuda, this pan is very deep. When it was first installed on my car it become the lowest component on the under carriage, even lower then my hooker headers. I had my friend who is a fabricator modify the pan and make it smaller or not as deep.

    Rear End Questions...

Not sure for an 8 1/4 diff, but for an 8 3/4 considering the cost of all the parts that will be required, remember the sure grip unit alone brand new is $400-$500 and a new crown and pinion gear set is $200, complete bearing and seal package new is $100. Average labour rate these days is around...

    8 3/4 Rear diff. fluid

I have an 8 3/4 diff in the back of my car, its open for the moment, till I can afford the sure grip. I'm running 3.91's and the mechanic is suggesting to go with a thicker fluid (80w-90) since I'm not using a stock gear that the diff will have a higher operating temp. Good idea or bad idea.
