I like the hurst promatic's. It fit under the console of the wifes duster and looked stock to a ford or chevy person.

I don't use one. I installed my brand new 727 in 1987 and lived on gravel roads. Never sprouted a leak.

I had one bolted in my 65 Dart for a year. I replaced it with a narrowed 8 3/4 to fit 28/ 12.5's under the wheel wells I used an A body 8.25

Get you an a body 8 1/4, bolts right in. You will need to do something about that drive shaft.

I use a 741 case on my Dart with a 340 4 speed. Ran the best of 12.4 on drag radials with 3.23 gears. Nothing broke yet and I'm not easy on it one bit.

I didn't have a problem with my column shift and hooker headers. On my wifes car she demanded a floor shift and went with a Hurst promatic 2. It's a great shifter and after 10 years, no issues with getting sloppy. Plus I fit it below the console so it still looks kinda factoryish.

For the past 7 years I never had an issue running a 741 case behind my 340 4 speed. I abuse the hell out of that car, even with 12 second passes.

741, 742, and 489 will interchange on any 8 3/4 axle housing. the ring and pinion are not interchangeable between the 3 center sections

PTC all the way. I was researching converters a few years back and the dynamics were having issues with the hubs cracking.

I think you will be fine. I run a 741 case in my 340 4 speed, #3450 pound Dart. My 340 is about 400 horse, it pushed a #3300 pound Duster into the 12's.

Check out Cope racing. I use a reverse manual from them and my 2nd to 3rd gear shift hits lit a sledge hammer and rattles my dashboard

I don't believe there is much for ratios out there for the 741 case. Factory did offer 3.91's but most aftermarket only go 3.73 for their steepest gears.

A 741 has the smallest pinion diameter of the 8 3/4 but they are durable. I flog the snot out of mine with a 400 horse 340 and a 4 speed. It been great for the last 7 years.

That dashes my plans. My mustang is a bit narrower than my Dart so I assumed the underpinnings were too. Looks like I'll be having a few inches removed from the 8 3/4 once I get the tubs and ladder bars in.
