Ok, so by "new" I meant different length. What would a normal charge for getting that shortened? I have heard of ppl shortening the driveshafts themselves, how well does that work if you make sure the yoke is "clocked" right when you weld it?

I actually don't have the brakes for either axle. The 8 1/4" I have is complete from the backing plates in, no brakes, no drums. I am told it was from an early 70's a body, are all 8 1/4" brakes the same? The 8 3/4" has no backing plates or brakes. I do have another 8 1/4" from a Dodge Van, so...

Not any places around me that narrows rearends, what is something like that worth? I have an 8 3/4" 489, 3.23, out of a mid 70s dodge pickup. Is it better to get the axles cut or buy new ones? I can get an 8 1/4" (2.72?) abody rear for my 68 valiant and a set of 3.23 gears locally for $300. Thanks.

Instead of removing the upper brace, which I imagine is a PITA, could you get away with cutting the brace just where it hits and fill it in with new steel?

I would really like to know more about this. What special tools do I need? I really can't do worse than the guy I had. I have rebuilt several motors, do all my own work to my vehicles.

The problem ended up being the speedo gear spinning around the speedo cable. I put the speedo gear in the vise and gave it a squish, problem solved.

The speedo stopped working in my Valiant. I pulled the cable from the speedo and it doesn't turn while driving. So I thought broken cable. Unbolted the cable from the tranny and it doesnt seem to be broken, I can spin it by hand. I hooked it back up and the speedo worked for about 100 ft then...

I seen a site where the guy cut the "fins" off of the tranny and only had to modify the crossmember...i think, does that sound doable?

My 97 TJ 4.0L has a 999.

Look at the tranny pan. should be easy to tell. If it's "square" with a corner "cut" out of it, it's a 904/500, if it has a bump diagonal from the "cut" corner it's a 727/518.

The tranny is leaking on my 999 in my Jeep. I found it is leaking out of the dipstick tube, creeping along the gasket, so it looks like the gasket is leaking. So I changed the o ring, still leaks. :(

Since I have owned the car, a year, the Valiant wont hit kickdown at highway speed. But as far as I know it will at slower speeds i think around 30 mph. It will work doing it manually. I know you can burn up a tranny if it isn't working right so how do I adjust it? Thanks.
