Need some advice tuning new engine

Thanks! The carb had the orange springs, and I changed them to the pink. It helped a lot! Pretty damn easy to change out the springs. I just took it for a short cruise, and it surged slightly a couple of times at the higher rpms, but didn't a couple of other times. I pushed it to over 6000...

Need some advice tuning new engine

I'm pretty much a rank amateur mechanic. But I built an engine and it runs. I couldn't have done it without the help of this forum . After the initial break in, I had a couple of oil leaks and the intake wasn't sealed correctly. I fixed this stuff and now I need some help to dial it...

New some advice in tuning my new engine

D'oh, can't edit the title, see other post please. Is there a way to delete a post?

    Hood clearance/air cleaner

Thanks, I've never seen those spacers. Does your carter have an electric choke? That big round thing hits on the bottom of the drop base about 1/2" before the base seats on the carb flange.

    Hood clearance/air cleaner

67 Barracuda, 408 stroker, Edelbrock Air Gap intake. I just switched from a Holley to an Edelbrock carb. The Edelbrock has an electric choke and the fuel inlet is at the top of the carb, so the drop type air cleaner I had (14" diameter, 3" tall filter element) won't fit. It hits on the choke...

    Rev limiter on FBO ignition?

I found one of those procomp rev limters on ebay for $27 + $5 shipping. Hopefully it isn't a piece of crap. A little short on $$ right now after spending way too much on my the rest of my car. Now I have to figure out what RPM to set it at. I only have about 30 miles on the car and it...

    Rev limiter on FBO ignition?

Thanks for the responses. Since I have no experience with them, I didn't want to get one and find out that it only works with special ignition systems.

    Rev limiter on FBO ignition?

I have a "stockish" FBO ignition system on my 408 (chrome box, stock but recurved dist, ballast resistor). Is there a rev limiter I can use with this? I've never used a rev limiter before, but this car gets up there in a hurry. I tried calling FBO a couple of times and no answer and no...

    What will fit (Valve covers)

I have the mopar performance aluminum valve covers on my eddie heads and hughes roller rockers. They fit with the baffles installed. The MT valve covers I planned on using were too shallow to fit with the baffles installed.

Anbody have problems with Hughes rockers loosening?

Thanks for the replies. I imagine it was probably my fault, just wanted to make sure there wasn't an unknown issue out there I should know about. I guess I will just have to tighten them tight and keep an eye on them for a while.

Anbody have problems with Hughes rockers loosening?

I probably only have about 45 minutes run time on my newly completed engine, sounded pretty peppy. I just got the exhaust system on yesterday and heard some clicking and popping. (Before it was open headers). Anyway, I pulled the valve covers and one of the adjustment bolts for the Hughes...

    Starter too close to headers?

It is a Chrysler Denso starter off of an 89 Dakota (PickNPull). I have three, two off of Dakotas, and one off of a van. They all look the same. The connections for the battery cable are on top and shouldn't be a problem. I haven't connected them yet. I'm thinking that I should route them...

    Starter too close to headers?

Thanks, looks like I have some work to do. I have some other stuff I need to order from Summit, and their main warehouse in Reno, NV is right over the mountains from me. It only takes one or two days when they ship to me. I was wondering, is my starter in weird position compared to most of...

Sorry to seem dense, but I'm not sure exactly what you mean.

    Starter too close to headers?

My TTI headers touch my mini starter. Do others have this problem? Will my starter fry? Obviously the rubber cover on the bolts will melt if I don't remove them. What have you done to fix this?

    Starter Options

The mini starters from Dakotas, full size trucks and vans are great, half the draw and twice the power. You may miss the Dodge starter "whine" sound though. I've pulled a couple from the Pick-N-Pull and are only about $25, the vans and trucks take about 5 minutes to pull, the Dakota starters...

    Question about MP valve covers

Thanks for the replies, I guess I should call Hughes. I don't think I'm in the market for $300 valve covers.

    Question about MP valve covers

Stock height Mopar Performance valve covers. I know a lot of you have these. Has anybody had any issues with clearance with roller rockers? I have the Hughes roller rockers. Also, do they come with a baffle kit or something, because according to Summit (in the product description) they do...

Installation of TTI headers advice request

Yes, the passenger side exhaust manifold is off, the driver side is still on, but unbolted so I could get to the head bolts easily. It will be coming off tomorrow and the headers are going on. BTW, I put studs for the ends of the exhaust manifolds, and will use bolts for the other mounting...

Installation of TTI headers advice request

408 SB in 67 Barracuda. I got the engine broken in with the stock manifolds and now I am going to install my TTI headers. Is there any way to get these in without pulling the engine? Will I need to pull the steering column or steering box? (power steering) Any hints or advice is...

    New engine wouldn't start

I guess it was the timing. It wasn't 180 off, I tried that and didn't help. I just moved the dist small increments until the fires stopped and then all of a sudden, BAM, it fired right up. I think my daughter was a lucky charm. My neighbor was here as my backup, Then he had to leave. My...

    New engine wouldn't start

Got it running:cheers:. It only ran it for 10 minutes though, it was getting really hot, I shut it off at 230 degrees. The oil pressure gauge was at about 80, seems really high. Is this normal? I don't have a high pressure oil pump. Maybe it is just the cheap Sunpro gauge because the...

    New engine wouldn't start

I cranked damper 360 degrees back to the zero which is 180 on the engine, and flipped the dist around so the rotor is still pointing toward the front. The wires don't fit very well if the #1 is at the rear. So in essence I am at the "other" TDC but 180 from where I was. Does this make sense...

    New engine wouldn't start

408 SB. New engine I finally got it all together, and went to start it for the first time. Definitely have fuel, and I must have spark since it backfired and flames were coming from the carb. It almost starts, but won't. It seems like a timing issue. I put it at TDC by feeling the air...

Fill block with water before starting?

I was wondering if I should fill the block with water/antifreeze before starting it. It is a new engine. This is my first build and I am about to break in the engine. Or, will it fill OK just by filling the radiator? Or, should I take out the thermostat?

Oil leaks out of oil filter plate

The Canton plate sealed nicely. Good call Moper on grinding the socket. I had an extra 1" socket and ground down the end of it. It grabbed much better. It's funny how sometimes you just don't look at stuff. I never really noticed that the first 1/8" of the socket is tapered.
