car won't start until I release the key from the cranking position.

Had this issue, and what I found. Run puts 12v to the ballast and drops V to the coil to about 7-8 volts. Start bypasses the ballast and puts full voltage to the coil to help starting when the voltage is being pulled down by the high current draw of the starter. * the key is - “Run” drops out...

base timing keeps advancing by itself...

Damn, think that's what I said. Glad you found it. It's nice to have springs that do not allow advance until above, say 1000 rpm. That way, everything is static at idle. mixtures and speed can be set without timing changes.

    Timing

I agree w this guy. He helped me w something been troubling me for a while. - throw another Thanks. Stuff you are dealing with is old and no telling how many people had their hands in it. Set total timing. - to something comfortable. * 32 before? Check idle timing. If its less than 5* - you...

base timing keeps advancing by itself...

Throw this in. When warmed up, idle is higher. Because the mech advance springs are soft or too long and distributor is already in the curve. So advances at low rpms. And it may also be aggravated by dirty, hanging pivotal movement. & May not pull back. Seen it, been there. - but din’t...

Found a diagram of the cluster. Thanks. I think I can handle it from here.

    Another starting problem

67Dart273; “backfeed” was the word I was looking for. I jumped 12v from the battery to the IGN1 side of the ballast and it started right up and ran. And wouldn’t cut off! Oh yea, the jumper! Apparently the load in the IGN1 side is pulling the voltage down. I the DkBlu goes to pin 1 of the...

Yes. Was my plan. I’ll let you know.

    Another starting problem

I believe Wire to the relay and and Ign2 (assuming that is the ballast start side wire) are two separate paths from the switch. Because when I jump 12v to the Ign2 side of the ballast, the starter relay doesn’t click.

    Another starting problem

It runs in the run position. Fires up when the key is backed to the run position from start. Hardly ever starts while cranking. Have full voltage to the coil. Half voltage to the ECU while cranking.

    Another starting problem

Start over - ! Ha! Just wish is would start right! 73 Duster w electronic ignition. I Disconnected starter wire from relay so it wouldn’t crank. I put a test light on Ign2 when key on and it is half brightness. Turn the key to start and it goes full brightness. OK I put the light on Ign1 side...

    Another starting problem

Been dealing with this for a while. My car usually fires when the key is released to run. I think I’ve found the problem, and just want an affirmation. Believe my key switch is bad. When I turn the key to start, run voltage goes away. Is this normal? - I wouldn’t think so.

Car wont start unless door is open

Wow. Started reading this post. OP stated this car had sat it a field for 20 years. imagine every connection needs to be looked at! anything diddled with has to be double looked at. May I suggest using a test light, ( something that draws current) rather than a meter, to check for power...

    Funky alternator wiring- '73 Duster

I don’t know why you just cut the taped harness back and chase the wire to where it goes. Or put a meter on it and ohm out where it goes. Charge would go back to battry. Somone may have found it necessary to ground the alternator. These cars are old, each owner over the years had their...

    What Circuits For Relay?

Bingo! Notice new cars have fuse block strapped to + terminal on battery. Under hood and close to destination. My thought was to use original wiring as “activation” for relay that is close and directly wired to battery - to assure full 12v is on the circuit. Hide it all under the battery tray...

    65 MOPAR AM radio repair

Norm, Have you hooked it up and checked out the condition? My observation is these were built like bricks. The electronics were heavy duty, you only have to concern with the wear areas. Dial cord, push button lubrication, and potentiometer cleaning. I like to see original radios and an...

Edited: another fuel/temp gauge thread, but turns out the harness is melted together

Both gauges havE a regulated source. The IVR is nothing but a flasher. 1 sec on, 1 sec off. Averaging to half the supply voltage. Slow responding heated spring wire gauges are not “meters” and respond slow Put a LM7806 three leg voltage regulator in place of the “5v regulator flasher” I’ve...

Starter stays engaged ONLY in park???

Do you have a voltmeter? We can figure this out if it is an electrical issue. Sounds like NSS ground is good. W key on - “RUN” there should be no voltage on the start relay activation terminal. But, …. When you say your starter is still engaged after starting, Does it sound like it is...

Starter stays engaged ONLY in park???

Yea, your car is possessed. Sounds like “start” is shorted to “Run” At the ballast? Dunno. Just a guess. You need to wring out those wires. “Start” is interrupted by the neutral safety switch. Yours sounds corrupt.

    High output alternator recommendations

The gauge of the wire from the alternator should be upgraded with any alternator upgrade over stock. Any connectors should be eliminated as I feel slip together connectors do not have the connecting surface area to pass the increased amperage. Resistance = heat = burned up connections. My...

    Elect Ign Distributor Output LOW?

With my dist in a vice and spinning with a drill @about 600rpm, I have measured the AC voltage. I have taken some of the high density earth magnets and stuck them to the metal behind the original black magnet and almost doubled the output. .7 to 1.5v The magnets have to lay on the correct...

    Elect Ign Distributor Output LOW?

I’ve spun the dizzy w a drill and measured AC output. At 600rpm i get about .7vac More voltage with more RPM. Thinking it’s trigger voltage. Yes. Good connections are important with such low voltage.

    Elect Ign Distributor Output LOW?

Yes, yes and yes. Good connections. ECU has a ground strap to it. Has happened w different ECUs and even a MSD box. It Maybe the cheap shina replacement pickups. OR it just may be me. I seem to have all the bad luck.

    Elect Ign Distributor Output LOW?

Has anyone had a problem with the stock electronic ignition distributor not triggering the ECU? More than once, I had the situation where the car wouldn’t start, and when I checked it out, I had no fire unless the distributor was spun fast. Spinning slow resulted with no spark. I pulled the...

Throwing my hands up on this ignition!

I’ve had issues w MSD boxes too. found by removing the distributor and spinning it by hand, it would spark when spun fast, but not when spun slow. And spark everytime the white wire was tapped on ground. I replaced the pickup w a new one and gapped it close. Spinning dizzy w a drill and...
