    NSS symtoms

I jiggled the wires beneath the dash and in the engine bay. When this happened today I o[ut the gear selector in neutral and I got the same noise. Cleaning the connectors is a good idea, i'll give that a shot and see what happens maybe they are just dirty.

    NSS symtoms

What are the symtoms of a bad neutral safety switch, or one thats on its way out? As far as I know the one on My Duster may even be the original part. I keep having random starting issues where when I turn the key I get a clattering sound like theres barely a connection. The battery is fairly...

    Emergency Switch?

Very interesting, how exactly is this switch activated? There looks to be a red button then a red switch on the other side of the box. Lately I have been wiping out relays and this would be a simple/safer way to start the car if I am out someplace.

    Emergency Switch?

Anyone know about an emergency ignition switch on these cars? Sorry I don't have a picture. But my '74 Duster has this box with a red button on it. It's in the rear of the engine bay near the ballast resistor and ECU. I have been told it is used to start the car if thre is an emergency. There...

    Engine cranks but won't start

Who makes good relays? Seems like they are all foreign parts. I have used "standard ignition" (The more expensive part not the cheap one $17 vs $5) The one currently on it is a duralast that is only a couple months old, if that. What brand do you reccomend? Thanks

    Engine cranks but won't start

Found the problem. Turned out to be simple. I had two wires going to the positive and one to the negative. That was the tach wire. The second one from the positive goes to the negative. So the coil issue is solved. But after all this cranking the relay is shot. I have been going through these...

    Engine cranks but won't start

I did not replace the ballast resistor. It's a couple years old though. When the key is released it does not want to fire. I did look at the ballast and seemed to be okay as far as being grounded. It was also warm but I have read that is normal. I had the car out less than a week ago which leads...

    Engine cranks but won't start

I made sure the regulator bolts were on tight. A couple friends of mine reccomended the coil. They have it on there small blocks with no issues. The instructions only state using one of there higher output ballast only with points ignition. 68383GTS - I will give that a shot tomorrow evening...

    Engine cranks but won't start

Over the course of four days I replaced the following on my 318. Voltage regulator, new spark plugs and a MSD blaster coil. The car cranks but will not fire up. I am thinking I did something wrong when hooking the coil up but everything looks good. Sounds fine when cranking but will not engage...

    Battery overcharging

I do have the two water caps on top of the battery. Last time I checked they were about half empty. I didn't want to add more water becuase I was afraid it would make things worse. Honestly, I have no idea what the water is for, what does it solve?

    Battery overcharging

Is almost 16 or so volts for a battery overcharging? Thats typically what mine is. I always thought 15 was normal. After a period of time a tiny bit of acid seeps out the top. I know that can't be normal. The battery and voltage regulator are over two years old. Maybe a faulty battery? It's an...

    Clattering sound from starter

Do you think it's a faulty part? Just a few weeks ago we replaced it with a brand new one. Before that it wouldn't start. I wasn't getting anything when I turned the key. No grinding, no click, nothing. We replaced the relay then everything was good. The current relay is a Standard Motor part...

    Clattering sound from starter

I have an update. I defiently ran out of gas. Once it was towed home I got a couple gallons of gas and after a few cranks it fired up. All is good with the fuel issue. The car started fine then but now I am still having this clattering sound from the starter. The only way the car starts is...

    Clattering sound from starter

I should also mention five minutes prior to quitting the car started right up fine. We were at the movies then heading home. When I left my house that evening started fine as well. When towed back to my house we checked the battery and it was reading well over 15volts. Thats too much isn't it?

    Clattering sound from starter

Not sure what to post this under but here it goes. My car died last night when getting on the highway. I pulled over and tried to start it back up. The engine wouldn't crank over but there was a nasty sound coming from what I think is the starter. It's a rapid clattering sound. I quickly...

    Relay?

Thanks for the info. I purchased a new relay and we bolted it on just a few minutes ago. Fired right up. So it had to been a bad part. Hopefully that solves the starting issues and won't happen again. Thanks again.

    Relay?

Is there a way to test the starter relay? All the sudden my Duster will not start. Lights come on though. Battery has enough juice. Car does not crank or click. Nothing happens when I turn the key. Starter relay and starter itself are around three years old. We think the relay should be replaced...

    miss after advancing timing

The plugs and wires were installed last December. Plugs were autolite, I believe 65's. Wires are Taylor 8.2mm. I did the best I could to route them without touching eachother. Right now the idel mixture screws are turned out quite a bit. I tried turning them in but according to the vaccum gauge...

    miss after advancing timing

I fooled around with it again today. I drove up to where I work to visit a co-worker who used to build small block Mopars back in the day. Im usually off on the weekends. It's a auto parts warehouse but has a store in the front. So I went there to see what he thought was going on. I showed him...

    miss after advancing timing

I'll try to describe the sound as best as I can. It's like a very rapid rattling sound, but it's almost a constant noise not a ping, ping, ping. And sort of high pitch. It's rather hard to hear and lasts for only a few seconds while driving. I always expected pinging to be just that, a ping. I...

    miss after advancing timing

Everything appears to be clear from the exhaust. Defiently coming from the engine. It never did this until I changed the timing. So it must be too advance. I'll try to get a video tomorrow and post it. I'll also play around with it again and try retarding it down a few degress and see if it...

    miss after advancing timing

I got the timing light back tonight. I'll try messing with it tomorrow sometime. What exactly do you mean by "assuming the total is in by 2,500rpm?" I guess what I need is a step-by-step process. Don't know if I mentioned before but im somewhat new to this. So really the timing needs to be...

    miss after advancing timing

I gave the timing light back to my buddy becuase he needed it. If I need to i'll try and get it back from him this weekened. Would it be safe to lossen the distributor and turn it clockwise just a tad? Just a small amount should be about 2* and make it 34* total. What exactly is making this...

    miss after advancing timing

I tinkered around with the car today. I bought a good vaccum gauge and removed the vaccum cap coming off the front of the carburetor to plug in the gauge. I turned both idel mixture screws to get the highest vaccum reading. Right now it's around 18-19psi while in park. Sounds much smoother. When...

    miss after advancing timing

I'll pick up a vaccum gauge tomorrow and take the car out and try to tune this properly. Hopefully it dosn't rain like they have been saying. As far as getting vaccum, will the hose coming from the pcv valve work with the guage? I will let you know how it goes. Thanks for all the great help.

    miss after advancing timing

Thanks for the great info. I'll have to try this. I should have mentioned before about my distributor. It is a stock replacement piece. But the springs were ditched in favor of two equal size mopar performance springs. Is this what the vaccum advance is? From what I was told they make the timing...

    miss after advancing timing

It's a 500cfm edelbrock electric choke. After thinking a bit are you refering to the two small screws near the base of the carburetor? If so how much do I turn them?

    miss after advancing timing

I'll give that a shot tomorrow morning. Thats a great tip. I wasn't really focusing on that when advancing the timing. But I will try it. Thanks

    miss after advancing timing

Don't I have to rev the engine in order to get see what the total is? Isn't the initial timing not as important as total. I ususally have a friend do this so sorry if anything sounds dumb. Im somewhat new to this. It's interesting how much difference adjusting the timing makes. Thanks

    miss after advancing timing

Right now in park it idles around 600-650rpm. But if I turn the screw clockwise the rpms obviously increase but how far do I go? I know it shouldn't idel near 1,000rpm in park. What exactly do you mean the highest vaccum possible? Thanks
