    Compu Tronix Distributorless Ignition?

We've been having a bunch of trouble with carbon tracking in the distributor cap on our 383. Just switched over to MSD low-resistance wires and now looks like the new HEI-style cap is tracking after only a month. Was looking for a way to eliminate the old cap/rotor system. Crank trigger...

    headlights

Quite true... We got so tired of having ground issues on my son's Dart that we ran dedicated grounds to all the lighting and electronics. Now all the electrons have a straight highway back to the battery.....

    headlights

See if you have power at the high/low dimmer switch. If you do, check for power coming out of the switch. If you have power at the switch but none coming out, its the dimmer switch. If no power at the dimmer switch, check at the output from the headlight switch. Since you have parking lights...

    Rotor/Reluctor Phasing Question

Here's an article I saved from the internet. It says turning the screw CCW will tighten the spring and reduce advance for a set vacuum level. http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php?topic=14888.0 Also has a good explanation of ported vs. manifold vacuum for distributor advance.

    Rotor/Reluctor Phasing Question

The vac can on the distributor is adjustable. We have already put 3 turns CCW into it, but with 20 inches of vacuum at idle, it still adds about 28 degrees. How many turns CCW can we go before the adjustment runs out ?

    Rotor/Reluctor Phasing Question

Actually, my guess would be not that your timing changed, but that the improved combustion from the HEI upgrade probably increased the strength of the combustion pressure wave, which increases peak cylinder pressure. Too high a peak cylinder pressure and you get detonation, i.e., ping. So you...

Vacuum advance makes car shut off...WTF??

Update.... Turns out the reluctor wires were reversed, so the distributor was out of phase. Switched the reluctor wires and re-timed the distributor and now the vacuum advance can be connected with no problem. Only now we have to find a vacuum advance can that adds less than the 28 degrees...

    Rotor/Reluctor Phasing Question

Well, we got the wires switched and the distributor re-phased. 12 degrees static timing. The idle is noticeably smoother than before, and we found that we can now hook up the vacuum advance without having the car stall (see http://www.forabodiesonly.com/mopar/showthread.php?t=203029). But the...

    Rotor/Reluctor Phasing Question

Yes, I did see the instructions. But the car was running smoothly enough that it never occurred to us that the wiring might have been reversed from the start. Looking forward to seeing how it runs when its in phase......

    Rotor/Reluctor Phasing Question

That would make sense based on how the car was when we bought it. When we first got it home, we found it was running almost 30 degrees of static timing. We have since changed that to 18 degrees static, and had noticed that the engine's response to throttle was a little "lazy". We just...

    Rotor/Reluctor Phasing Question

OK, now we're getting somewhere.... Is it possible to tell whether the timing would need to be advanced or retarded once I swap the wire connections..? Or do I just have to swap the connections and try to start the car and take it from there...

    Rotor/Reluctor Phasing Question

While attempting to check the reluctor to pickup clearance in my son's '68 Dart 318, we found the following anomaly. With the balancer set to 18 deg BTDC (our idle timing setting), we found that the reluctor was not aligned with the pickup. Since the car runs fine, we're a little confused...

    Replacement Distributor Connector

Vacuum advance makes car shut off...WTF??

I'm going to install a rebuilt dist that I ordered from Autozone and see where that gets me. As mentioned, that also eliminates the possibility of wear in the other components as well. And for the $40 price I could hardly replace the components in my old dist.

Vacuum advance makes car shut off...WTF??

OK, so I know where I need to focus my attention. It's either going to be the pin on the pickup plate being worn, or the hole in the baseplate when the pin goes is worn. Finding a new pickup plate assembly is easy, but does anyone know where I can find a new base plate (the part that screws...

Vacuum advance makes car shut off...WTF??

I was thinking that the pivot pin on the pickup plate might be worn, or the pivot pin hole in the base plate, allowing the plate to rock. Guess I'll have to pull it apart and check that.

Vacuum advance makes car shut off...WTF??

Here's my problem, We have been running my son's '68 Dart without the vacuum advance connected (it was that way when we bought it). After installing a new intake and carb this week, we decided to hook up the vacuum advance in hopes of improving gas mileage somewhat. When I hooked up my...
