I just bolted an AVS2 650 onto my 340. Its only run on the test stand but so far so good. You can buy calibration kits for them for about $70 USD. I went to bigger rods right away as it was rich which is typical.
I've heard of guys installing a small electric pre start fuel pump so you don't have to crank the engine so much. Just run it briefly to fill the bowls. You could just manually fill the bowls too. It all sounds like a pia though.
Primary bores are the same but secondary is slightly larger on the 650. Jetting is different. I would guess you could tune either for a 318 street engine….experts may beg to differ
AFR meters are great for tuning but as with many diagnostic tools you have to know what to do with the information. Does the AFR reading line up with the drivability issue, exhaust smell, plug condition, etc?
I use an old Innovate LM1 to tune my carb. I think I paid $250 many years ago so not cheap. I weld an O2 bung into the pipe near the header and run the cable out through the passenger window :). Its a temporary install.
There is no evidence. Its just your observations. It may or may not be a counterfeit. For all any of us know they could make them in 2 different factories. Did you try and contact Carter and ask them?
I bought one of those from Amazon a few months ago. They list it as made in Korea. I'll have to look to see if I have the box. Its installed but I haven't run it yet.
I just bought a 650 AVS2 yesterday. I figure the AVS2 is the latest iteration of the early carbs that use the metering rods. People here have good things to say about it.
I'm interested to know where you buy a rebuilt and prepped 50 year old carb. Is somebody specializing in this? Is it really better than the latest and greatest AVS2?
