How to launch a manual on the street?

If you want to learn how to drive with a clutch, the Car Talk guys had a good suggestion. Go to a parking lot and try to start moving without using the gas pedal, just slipping the clutch. Also practice starting uphill in a place where people won't drive right up behind you, like they do...

    Input bearing renewal

OK sounds like 2 schools of thought. My main issue is noise when in neutral. I guess the best approach would be to disassemble the unit. I'll learn more that way and my usual experience is that trying to do it the easy way often turns out to be harder. I have until the summer to think about...

    Input bearing renewal

Can anyone tell me the minimum amount of disassembly required to replace a bad input bearing? Can I just take off the input bearing retainer, that the throwout bearing slides onto, and work the old bearing off, or do I need to take the whole transmission apart?

/6 with 4 Speed OD, rear gear recommendations?

I have a similar setup in my /6, and I'm planning to switch to a 3.23 ratio. Like you, I'm not a tire-screecher, and am looking to retain the awesome MPG I'm getting with the 4-speed OD and stock rear gears(2.76?). Most people like the 3.55 and up, but they might be more concerned about launch...

    First post: neutral rattle

Ah. I was calling that the input bearing, but I got you. That makes me feel better in a way, since I had been considering changing the bushing that is in the end of the crankshaft, that I had been calling the pilot bearing, but slacked off. Now the problem would be finding the proper bearing...

    First post: neutral rattle

Didn't change the pilot bearing, so that could well be the source of the noise. At this point it will have to wait until next summer; I'm headed to the Philippines this month, and have too much to do until then. I had the trans in and out several times, so the pilot shaft bearing could have...

    First post: neutral rattle

Are you referring to the input bearing or the pilot bearing? That reminds me to check the transmission oil level, maybe that's low. I refilled it but spilled some on the installation.

Thanks for the replies. Throwout bearing is a heavy-duty one and has less than 500 miles on it. I did put a return spring between clutch fork and starter bolt during the overhaul. I wonder if I change the angle of the new spring, that might line up the clutch fork differently. Hot rods....

    First post: neutral rattle

Hello Forum members, this is my first post on this forum. I have been a member of slantsix.org for awhile known as Slantfin. I started to feel guilty about sneaking in questions about my 340, so I decided to join For A-bodies Only. My problem is that when in neutral, the clutch rattles and...
