    Another engine ID mystery.

The sticker is the part number. There really isn't much else to learn since we know that all of them were cast-crank, hydraulic lifter 225 engines by then. I had a '68 also. What engine is your car coded for in the VIN? Check the 5th digit...if it's an A it originally had a 170 like my car did...

    Oil from Manifold?

I've never seen that one before...if it's an original engine that hasn't been apart then it has a steel shim head gasket that could theoretically rot out and leak. Might want to brake clean it off and then carefully watch it while someone runs the engine about 2500 rpm. Watch the fan!

Anybody ever see a N97 Noise Reduction Package on a slant six Duster?

I have a '75 slant-six Swinger with the deluxe insulation package. So far I've seen insulation underneath the forward portion of the trunk mat, insulation between the trunk and rear seat, under the dash, under the rear seat bottom, tar boards on the floor pans, a hood pad and a resonator. Has...

engine number stamp on the block

Welcome to the world of partially-informative replies. The number you posted is the partial VIN. It's the last 8 digits of the original host vehicle's VIN. The first digit indicated the year, the second indicated the plant the vehicle was manufactured at and the last 6 was the production...

    Spark Plugs

I run the exact same type Champions in my '68 as the factory put in. I buy them as New Old Stock from eBay. No brand of plug has ever made it run better or worse at all.

    Points gap for a 63' slant 6 225

Pardon? What he meant to say was more closed, more dwell. The real-world way to do it is pull the distributor out and take it over to the bench, or a table or whatever so you can actually see what you are doing. Of course, mark the position of the rotor before removal. Once you get it out and...

Hard Shift from 1st to 2nd

There is no adjustment on those at the carburetor end. The pre-74's had a slide at the carb end of the rod and a simple pivot at the trans end, but that changed in 1974 when they went from the Holley 1920 to the 1945. The '74's and later have the adjustment slider at the trans end. So, unless...

    I grenaded my slant 6

I've seen several that spun rod bearings, had one that threw #1 through the block, saw one in the junkyard a couple years ago that threw 5 and 6 through the block. Even though I like them, I don't think they are as durable as people like to believe. In contrast, I've never seen a 273 or 318...

    198 slant questions

You ought to be able to measure the stroke and tell what engine it is.

NO, do NOT remove the spark plug washers on drool tube heads!!

So, I started noticing oil down the passenger side of my '68's engine. Nothing unusual there because there are 3 leak points...valve cover gasket, spark plug tube seals and steel shim head gasket. This engine no longer has the steel head gasket and the valve cover gasket isn't very old, so I got...

    Will a 1976 Aluminum 1 Barrel carb work on my 69 Slant 6 225

I'm just curious why you wish to go through with this. There's no performance difference whatsoever and I'm pretty certain that late intake has an open choke pocket which is intended for an electric assist choke only. Nothing against novel ideas but you're facing problems you don't have now.

carburetor I'm not sure kinda at a loss

As long as you've been here(though not as long as I have) and you still feel the need to make smart-a** comments like this. What's wrong with you? Grown-ups on forums are supposed to welcome new people, not beat them over the head verbally with their cane. You're doing a very, very bad job of...

carburetor I'm not sure kinda at a loss

I'm sorry you got busted by the Grammar Policeman. You notice his only action was to criticize you, NOT help you. And btw...living in Alabama, I've been through Georgia many times and it is far from being the bastion of correct spelling and punctuation. Anyway...I've also dealt with those 1920...

    slant 6 swap to 318

Nothing much to it as far as work goes, but you can't use the slant six transmission with a V8, doesn't fit. The mounts on the K-member are different between 6 and 8 cylinder but they sell adapters, at least for the pre-72 cars, not sure about spool-type K-members. Other than that, it's...

    Holley 1920 Replacement Question

Another vote for a 1945. Replaced the 1920 on my '73 with a late ('84) 1945 in the summer of 2013 and it hasn't had to be touched since. Just remember they have their own specific choke and air cleaner.

    When they finally go BOOM

I was out at the junkyard recently and "adopted" a Super Six intake, carb, and air cleaner(which I might sell) from a '79 Volare sedan. I wondered why the "high" side of the engine was so oily, and when I got the intake off, I discovered a large hole in the side of the crankcase where 2 rods had...

    Holly 1v

With just a little work, a 1945 fits right on and puts an end to all the crap a 1920 has to offer. Put a 1945 on my '73 Valiant almost 2 years ago and it's ran fine ever since and hasn't leaked a drop of fuel.

    Oil pressure light when idle?

If you haven't changed the oil since the overhaul, you need to. Metal bits get into the oil from the rings seating, cam breaking in and whatever grit might be in the oil passages. Use dino oil until you have enough miles to ensure it's broken in. Good filter..WIX, Purolator, Hastings etc. No...

    Damsel in distress

With everyone's BEST INTENTIONS, we have confused the hell out of this lady. Don't worry about ANYTHING electrical at this point. If the engine is locked up or will only turn part of the way, it's done. The Way Forward is to have that engine pulled out and another used one installed or the...

    Damsel in distress

Clank noise? That ain't good. If you don't receive a Miracle and it start with the battery charged, then you'll have to have help. The VW forum has a list of members all across the country who go out of their way to help each other with a breakdown and all we can do so far is sit and crack...

    Damsel in distress

Have a man friend put a socket and breaker bar on the crank bolt at the front and attempt to turn the engine by hand. Turn it clockwise. If it turns, that's good. If not, that's bad.Something probably broke internally. It could have dropped a valve and jammed it up.I'd be interested to see if...

    idle jet fuel consumption.

I can't answer your question unfortunately, but 2 turns isn't a hard and fast rule. When you adjust idle mixture, your goal is to obtain the highest idle speed and correspondingly the highest vacuum reading. That may be 1-1/2 turns out, 2 turns out, 2-1/2 or anywhere in between. The 2 turns...

    225 /6 and trans value?

Around here I would have to give it away. Nowadays there are essentially two categories of used Mopar parts: 1. Rare and valuable. 2. Everything else. A Slant Six falls into the everything else category and people that buy everything else expect it to be cheap. Unless you have the...

Electronic Distributor in 1965 Valiant ?

You can tune advance curves to get the curve and total advance anywhere you want it, so don't feel that you are locked into THAT mechanical and vacuum advance curve. How do you plan to control this electronic distributor? You either need to use a Mopar box and ballast resistor, which I don't...

I need a little enlightenment on this Holley carb

Did you read post #7 where I said "IMO"... In My Opinion? This is not my first rodeo with 1920 carbs. I've had probably a dozen and only a couple ran well. The rest had stumbles, surges, leaks and stalls. Of COURSE they can be made to run well, but the problem is that the vast percentage...

I need a little enlightenment on this Holley carb

That's true but the Carter doesn't have the 1920's inherant flaws such as side hung float, gasksts below fuel level, metering block and the famous Holley ruptured pump diaphragm port
