Also, very hard to damage a yoke spline, means they are in the I.D.

I can only think there is a burr or "noogie" in one of the splines by the symptoms you described. I would see if the yoke slips on another tail shaft. If so, then the transmission splines are subject.

Yes, you should grease the zerts. If overfilled, it will come out through the rubber dust cover on one of the 4 caps. You can tell when it's getting close to that. They don't need to be greased very often but they need grease.

I cannot tell from the pictures to be absolute. It's really not a big deal, very easy to just measure your drive shaft u-joint and see.

Also, in case you are unaware, to get the backing plates off the 8.25, you'll need to pop the differential cover off the back and pull the pin to slide the axles out. Easy as pie.

Both have 3" axle housings, use the same backing plates, drums, same shock mounts, I think you'd be lucky to save 20 lbs, probably less. IF you really want to save weight, go to the 7.25. I just did a weight by weight comparison of the 7.25 vs 8.75 and the weight is pretty substantial...

also, many folks get super excited about torqueing them down and they crank 'em. Tighten them in a crossing pattern, snugging them up as you go. Maybe 20 ft. lbs, then go to about 40-45 lbs. You only want about 45 ft lbs max.

yes, if your skinny or working on a truck. For a A-body, rear axle on jack stands will give the same results and allow most of us to get underneath lol .

measure it. Slide the yoke all the way into the tranny, then measure the center to center of the u-joints, then subtract 3/4" to 1" from your measurement so the slip joint can do it's job.
