I had a similar problem on a 63 Dart. After 3 or 4 regulators and a couple of alternators, it was a short in the field wire. When I would try to fix it would work for a while and then stop charging when the wire would short again and take out the regulator.

This tach was in the car when I got it. It has not worked since I got it. How can I find out if it is the tach or the sender.
