Novak Adapters has quite an extensive knowledge base regarding common transmissions, transfer cases and engines on their site. It's biased towards 4WD vehicles, but 2WD is pretty much the same but simpler. Novak Conversions :: Manual
They also used the AX15 behind the 5.2 and later 3.9 plus the 4.7. The NV3500 and AX15 will bolt in place of each other and there's really no advantage to one over the other. They would both live fine behind the 5.2 but I wouldn't expect either one to put up with a lot of abuse behind a stout 360.
I believe it was called the "slick shift" modification. Every other spline from the sliding rings and every other engagement lug were ground flush. The synchro rings were removed.
On the track you shifted it quick and hard. Who cared how long it lasted. On the street you had to double...
At a minimum, I'd pull it apart and give everything a good visual inspection. If possible I'd replace mainshaft bearings, synchro rings and do a small parts kit.
Most later Dakotas had the NV3500. Pretty strong tranny. Not a quick shifting unit. Physically larger than an 883
Biggest problem with using a truck transmission is the shifter will be pretty far forward. Direct conflict with the dasahboard, heater, etc.
