Pull a spark plugs and ground it while cranking. You should see a blue spark. If it's yellow, it's not hot enough (low voltage) to keep the engine running.
With the manual you lose the boost every time you shift, assuming you are not WOT (wide open throttle) shifting. With the auto, the boost is there the whole time you are going through the gears. It is even easier to build boost for the launch.
My 360 crate motor with a 750 carb, 3.55 rear and 0.68 OD fifth gets 18 on the highway. The 225 should have a lot more potential. How much would EFI help? A hot spark with lots of advance is good (MSD). A front air dam would clean up the aerodynamics a little. K&N air filter is easy...
