Junkyard 5.9 for my 72 Van

Sounds like it is easier than through the front or passenger door. No lift available, I am sure my front end can use a rebuild but that is not in the cards right now. A very patient girlfriend is becoming impatient and wants this on the road :)

Junkyard 5.9 for my 72 Van

LOL, Oh, I will post some pics in the middle of the night when I get home. She is a big beast, Has the bubble roof like the ice cream man vans. With kayak racks on the sides of the top. Not a pretty picture and always gets the looks. The "Oh no he is coming right at us" looks. I just drive...

Junkyard 5.9 for my 72 Van

So it turns out this special wiring was completely home made. I know, no surprise. I guess the Previous owner did this to repair or upgrade whatever happened to the tail and brake lights in the past. I finished wiring it with new wire and connectors where I could and the new fuses and NOTHING...

Junkyard 5.9 for my 72 Van

You hit the nail on the head as far as name Bobzilla. I typed that in the search engine and bang, there they were on the screen. I will order a couple and rewire that area and see where it goes from there. Thank you for identifying and explaining the function of them. Mike

Junkyard 5.9 for my 72 Van

Thanks Dusted, Did my upside down work on the fuses and brakelight switch. Switch is good, panel is sketchy on one on section. I was thinking of getting one of those "Hot Rod" replacement wiring fuse panels. I bypassed the sketchy part of the panel and still no lights. More tomorrow I hope. Mike

Yes Dion, I was trying to knock it all out at once. Maybe tomorrow I can cut some fresh wire and solder some connectors. Mike

Junkyard 5.9 for my 72 Van

Long time no post. I had to stop driving the van as the brake lights and then tail lights stopped working. I did most if my testing a couple months back before my anemia got in the way. Taking procrit shots for anemia and just got the go ahead for a Kidney Transplant. Today was the first time...

Junkyard 5.9 for my 72 Van

You made me stop and think on it for a while Joe. Decided to go with the 90 Amp size that was a regular option on this engine I believe. While I have been upgrading wire as I go I would rather not have a lot of down time. I missed at least a week of working on it, not feeling well. I did see...

    Oh boy. Valvetrain geometry issues.

Is there a part number on those? Not the Hughes part number but a chevy part#?

Junkyard 5.9 for my 72 Van

Finally got the heads off and engine on the stand. The heads look like they came right out of the box with no mods. No porting etc. I did not measure valve size yet or look closely at the valve springs. Have not looked in the intake as I do not plan on using the barrel intake. I need to try and...

Junkyard 5.9 for my 72 Van

Thank you, I mentioned in the above reply that I am going with an Edelbrock 7477 and pulley to replace the AC pulley. Thanks for the link and tips. My LA 360 lost the ability to use mechanical fuel pump years ago(flattened fuel cam?) and I have been running an electric holley fuel pump so I am...

Junkyard 5.9 for my 72 Van

I neglected to mention I picked up a 7477 Edelbrock several years and plan on using that with the pulley for bypassing the air conditioning. Air conditioning that big old van would be great but when my brass radiator got stolen a few years ago they took the condenser with it. Maybe someday I can...

Junkyard 5.9 for my 72 Van

Of course they delivered it basically stripped, no exhaust manifolds, no engine brackets, pulleys etc. The front pulley bent from dropping it in the truck. So today I will try to hit some local pick n pull yards to piece that back together as I want to run the serpentine belt. My LA 360 had a...

Junkyard 5.9 for my 72 Van

Just got my 5.9 yesterday, waited 3 weeks for delivery. I was supposed to get a 5.9 with 99k, but it had a dead cylinder. They sold me a 97 5.9 with 109k. Someone had it at least partial apart at one time. CH318A cylinder heads. I pulled a valve cover and the intake and nothing looked new or...

    Terminator X for magnum engines

So has anyone here done this yet? Waiting on delivery of a 2000 5.9 engine today, 100K and current plan is for 7577 intake with 600 cfm carb. If this is an easy install the price is right for me. Mike

    Which torque converter

Thank you Bobzilla, My daily driver I think has had a cam lobe go flat or burned valve and I am trying to see what the cost would be to switch to a junkyard Magnum 5.9. Mike

    Which torque converter

Normally I can read a post and walk away with what I need. I just need to know which torque converter to use with a 99 Magnum 5.9 and a 727. I have a 72 LA 360 and matching 727. I had a great parts list made up for a magnum swap but apparently everything I own gets moved, lost, or stolen...

    Fair price for 360 magnum?

Thanks Joe, I omitted part of the story for brevity. I knew the prices, they are posted online and at the site. The kid must have been instructed to charge for everything possible. He tried to charge me for a smog pump... have not seen one of those on a 1999 5.9. Then tried to charge me for...

    Fair price for 360 magnum?

Yep, it isn't easy. I went to pull a 5.9 a few years ago on a half off sale and after two half days of wrenching got it up to the office with the help of my girlfriend pushing it on one of their hoists. I was going for as complete an engine as I could get. The kid at the cashier desk tried to...

    Fair price for 360 magnum?

Pick N Pull is having a 50% off sale this Friday May 25th through Monday May 28TH. If I didn't have top work this weekend I would try for a short block for a future build or spare for my van.
