    Ailing engine

My first thought when this started was possibly a bad valve seal somewhere. Jack

I am going to find out tomorrow. I am going to pull the top off the engine. That will tell me a lot as to what is going on. Jack

If I'm going to replace a head gasket I might as well do it all. It is still a job I can do in 2 or 3 days. Jack

    Ailing engine

I can't remember what the initial compressions were, that was 7 or 8 year ago. #8 had me scratching my head as well. Did it again and was the same. Jack

    Ailing engine

I started my 340 up this spring and noticed a **** load of blow by. I finally got around to doing some tests on it today. Compression is all over the map. There is light blue smoke coming out of the tail pipes. And you can see the amount of blow by in the video. The plug check showed all...

    360 and a blower

I have a single key stock forged crank in mine at 9 lbs of boost. The only time I ran into trouble with it was when I switched my pulleys to get 12 lbs of boost. Although it was great for power the stock balancer didn't like it and broke due to the extra torque on it. Took out the timing cover...

Mod man W-2 ported for 360-1 rectangle port

Right you are Scotty. If I had it to do over I would probably do a combination of what I did and what you are planning. I would still remove the extra material at the back of the mounting plate and I would also add a 2 inch spacer. I believe you would be better off in the long run that way. Jack

    Helicoil

I have already been thinking about that. Must get everything sealed up real good. Jack

    Helicoil

All great advice. So I take it I won't have any problems with the drill going in a place it shouldn't as long as I do my end correctly. Jack

    Helicoil

I have the engine out to check the crank and I am going to address a few other small problems while I am at it. One is I have 3 exhaust bolt holes that need to be helicoiled. They still have threads way in but out near the header flange somebody stripped the threads. I want to have proper header...

Small block with a six pack

Hey Bobby, ask 6pk2godemon, she will know. Jack

    Wanna share your recipe?

I've always been one to lay the oil on thick as well. But I don't think that is as important as being clean. I also check every clearance and torque at least 3 times. It usually takes me 2 days to assemble an engine the way I want and I don't trust anybody else to do it. Jack
  18. Coyote Jack

    Show off your small block.

I agree, that is a really cool setup. Jack

    Show off your small block.

Here's mine just before I installed it in the Demon. Jack And the day after I got it going at the Atlantic Nationals.

    small block 671 blower ?

Sounds like a real nice engine. What are you expecting for times? I would guess 8's. Jack

Is this a race setup? Jack

    small block 671 blower ?

Just curious on whether or not you are going EFI with the Bug Catcher. I have been researching the subject for myself, there are pitfalls. Jack

    Rusty Balancer

If there are no heat sensitive parts to it and you don't need for a couple of weeks, I could powder coat it for you Aaron. Give me a call on Monday night. Football is on today and tonight. LOL Jack

    HP estimate

You might want to think about the pistons again. Get something that will get it up to the 10.5 to 1 area with the closed chamber heads. The heads should have 2.02 intakes and as big an exhaust valve as you can get. A little porting and the heads are good to go. The cam should have enough overlap...

    273 and 360 interchangeability?

Is the 360 a newer Magnum type 360. If so there are a few problems that need to be addressed. Jack
  26. Coyote Jack

    small block 671 blower ?

Here is the story on the Modman. You can redrill the holes that attach it to the intake to move it forward a bit. The other thing you can do is cut the back of the plate so it is even with back of the intake. After that you have to install a blowoff valve in the side of the intake. After all...

    small block 671 blower ?

Yes, there are big problems with the dizzy if you use the Modman intake. They can be overcome though, I did it. Hampton Blowers also makes a kit for us. Jack

    Backfire turned bad day

That's what I was thinking after he posted that the pistons look good. Maybe had a spark box crap out or maybe a short in the limiter chip. Jack

    Boost and timing

Yup. detonation is the key and the first thing that feels it is the pistons. For the most part unless you are really producing some big ponies the rods and crank can take a lot of punishment. It is the pistons that usually die first and it doesn't really seem to matter that much if they are...

    Boost and timing

My bottom end is a stock forged crank, Eagle H-beam rods and TRW forged pistons. They are heavy which in my opinion helps in a boosted engine. My only advice on the timing is to start conservative and then sneak up on it a little at a time. Every engine is different, especially when it comes to...
