You've mentioned you can actuate the latch with your finger - I assume that means the latch itself is working reasonable well, which to me would still point to an issue with alignment or binding on the post. Does the door move smoothly as it engages the post/striker? If you close it slowly...

I think some spin, but I'm not %100 on that. Tightening it down shouldn't inhibit that anyway. Do you still have the old strikers? Swap one in and see if there's a difference?

New strikers... old latches? Is there a possibility the striker is too thick/binding in the latch channel?

Can you see exactly where on the striker the latch is contacting - smear it with grease or something that the latch will leave a mark in. If one washer made a difference, and that door is too far forward, then try adding another washer and see if that makes any difference.

Do you have a bench grinder? Get a buffing wheel for it. Go at the trim with some fine sandpaper to minimize the big spots, then run them on the buffing wheel with some polishing compound. Takes a bit to get the hang of it and they won't be perfect, but should come out better. Here's a couple...

If it's like a 72 valiant, open the door on the side of the stuck hinge, if you can see the hinge spring, get something long enough to push it towards the front of the car as someone GENTLY pulls the hood down. This should at least get it closed. I would definitely lube the snot out of it too.
