Fiberglass 6 pack hood get the heat out?

I think AJ runs so hot because he has a hi-temp thermostat? I'm just not comfortable running my big-block that hot. My car already has a dual 3" with x-pipe exhaust system... now what? :)

Fiberglass 6 pack hood get the heat out?

I have the same hood and my 451 (Contour electric fans, aluminum 3-core rad) will idle at 182 degrees in traffic all summer long... but warms up into the mid-to-high 190's when running on the highway at 65-70 mph (3300-3400 rpm)... It's possible that the open scoop is messing with the airflow...

    Radiator upgrade experiences?

Keep in mind that it's apples and oranges... or at least two different types of apples :D A radiator with three rows of 1/2" tubes definitely cools better than the same area with two rows of 1/2" tubes. I found that out in '83 while building my first big-block A-body... the recore was $140...

    Car getting real hot....

:BangHead: YR, we're wasting our time with those who do not want to understand, because they know that we're wrong. I'm no longer going to bother explaining in every overheating thread why that "coolant staying too long in the rad" is pure unadulterated bullshit.

Getting hot on the highway with the AC on.

BTW, I have a big-cammed ([email protected]) 451 low-deck, three-row 26" aluminum radiator, 180 Milodon high-flow stat, Flowkooler pump, non-a/c pulleys, Contour electric fans with Autocool PWM controller, 4-speed, 3.91 rear (3050 rpm @ 60 mph). Oh, and no air conditioning. It will idle at 182 degrees...

Getting hot on the highway with the AC on.

Or anyone else. Sorry, Brian, but you are almost totally wrong. As YR correctly explained early on page 1 of this thread. This stupid urban legend about coolant moving too fast and not giving up its heat is "not even wrong", as Wolfgang Pauli once said. Anyone with the least understanding of...

    Highway heat

Interesting. My Dart also runs a little warmer on the highway than at idle/slow speed... wonder if the six-pack scoop (unsealed to the single four barrel beneath it) is causing radiator airflow issues too. Easiest way to test that theory is probably just to duct-tape over the scoop opening and...

    Highway heat

If you think about it, that is not how thermodynamics of fluids work. That's not how any of this works. Period. Less time in the radiator is offset by more fluid passing through in a given time. This urban legend/myth has been popping up for the 40+ years I've been turning my own wrenches and I...

    Flex fan

Addicts can always justify whatever they need to get their next fix. Every state that raises the tobacco taxes sees a drop in smoking. Then when the lobbyists for the very wealthy industry get them reduced, people start killing themselves (and others around them) again. I look at it as job...

    Big block cooling issues

Can't you get more clearance without that 2" spacer?

    Big block cooling issues

As long as your oil pressure doesn't drop too far from the heat thinning it out, 230 doesn't sound dangerous. Depends on your piston-to-wall clearance, among other things... Normal operating temp on my 22 year old BMW V8 is 108C which is 226F!

    Flex fan

Electric dual fans from a Ford Contour (the second pic must be someone else's since the inlet and outlet are on the opposite sides from mine!) They keep my 451 and inexpensive 3-row aluminum radiator cool enough in low-90's weather (anything more and I am too hot to drive) :) Here they are...

    Flex fan

Last time I used a (stainless) flex fan on a big-block A-body, nearly 40 years ago, it was close to the radiator (an inch or less) but hadn't contacted it. I took my car for a front end alignment and the mechanic had obviously wound it way up because there was a perfect fan-sized circle cut into...

    Lower radiator hose recommendations needed

That reminds me, I once saw a patient who had a big tramp stamp with her own name in the center. I told my nurse afterwards that it's probably so the guy behind her knows which name to call her. She about peed herself laughing :D

Cooling System Update for 64 Dart

How much room is there from your water pump snout to the radiator? With a big-block it is very tight - other useful fans like the Chevy HHR won't fit. In fact the plastic on the fan shroud has to be trimmed a little to get any clearance at all. Here's a couple of snaps. It's been many years...

Cooling System Update for 64 Dart

Well, the OP did say that he wanted to overbuild the cooling system to handle anything he might want to do someday :) I figured it would go without saying (apparently not) that a stock Chrysler alternator from that era wouldn't have enough oomph, or big enough wiring. I designed my...

Cooling System Update for 64 Dart

Let the electric vs. mechanical debate begin! I prefer electric myself, so my 451 is cooled with a 3-row 26" aluminum radiator (there isn't room for a 2-tube), Ford Contour fans, and an Autocoolguy PWM controller. Works perfectly and maintains temp. You won't need that much cooling...

Running hot after partial coolant change

I really recommend you examine (and replace if needed) your rod and main bearings... there could be a lot of metallic crap that bypassed the filter. Also take the oil pump apart, it may be damaged/worn too. Is it just one lobe so far?

Running hot after partial coolant change

Ouch! Are you going to take the whole engine down, or change the oil a couple of times and put new bearings in?

    Fel Pro thermostat gaskets?

I don't think I've had a stock water neck leak regardless of what owl snot was used on the gasket (or not). Conversely I've never had a chrome one that DIDN'T leak. I gave up on them a long time ago. Maybe one of the o-ringed ones might work?

    Fel Pro thermostat gaskets?

Refresh my memory... is that a 3/8"-16 thread? something like 3/4" deep in the housing?

    Fel Pro thermostat gaskets?

Assuming you have a small-block of course :poke: One of the many things I like about B/RB engines is the "dry" intake manifold :) Although I do have an aluminum WP housing, so I should put studs in it too. Thanks for the suggestion.

    Big block cooling issues

It looks fine... molded radiator hoses would clean up the appearance (and flow better too) :) An inch?? That's a HUGE amount of clearance when it comes to big-block A-bodies

    Fel Pro thermostat gaskets?

Not quite the same - Hylomar is a solvent-based non hardening blue goop. The nearest locally available Permatex equivalent is #85420 "Fuel Resistant Gasket Dressing & Sealer". Run electric fans all the time?

I went to the Friday night cruise-in at the Steak & Shake. It was a bit cooler (around 80F). The temp stayed on 180 until I got to the highway, then it very slowly increased to a maximum of 184. Came back down to 182 when I got into town. :) Same thing coming home - never climbed above 184. Of...
