    You say with the cylinder head off everything looks ok. You tried turning the cam but what about the crankshaft? Years ago my sister broke a rod in a slant and drove it home. Wouldn’t lock up.     Don’t know about the Napa. Also didn’t know you had a slant. My DA didn’t look at what forum it was listed under. Should have known when the slantsixdan came up. 5d1022a airtex wells for the slant.

    Airtex Wells has a cap still 5d1090a that’s got copper and brass contacts. Rock auto under 10$. The cap is the same for electronic and points. Won’t say it’s the best but by today’s standards probably pretty good.

    Also make sure the bolt holes in the block have nothing in them to prevent the bolts pulling down. Any oil or crud can hydro lock or give false torque readings.

    I use a 60cc syringe to put fuel in Float bowl thru vent tube on carburetor. That alleviates the fuel system issue. Double check everything. If you have a volt/ohm gauge you can check to make sure your getting voltage to your coil. Fire extinguisher.

    I also believe that the engines that the hp and torque were based off of were probably as close to dimensionally perfect as possible. Thus the "blue printing" of engines. Lot of variables tie into mass production.

    Make sure the convertor is fully engaged into the front pump when you install the new tranny.

    One piece of advice is to be sure the torque converter is fully engaged into the pump on the trans. before mating it to the engine. Some can be a real bear and you risk damaging the pump in the trans. or cracking a transmission.
