Slip on has two spacers. If I remember right the left spacer has the piece that locks to the shifter. And to remove it you need to use like a feeler gage to slide it down that side to push the clip in. This is the type I have.

The shifter handle I have has a notch in it that locks when you slide it in. It also has the holes. I guess you can do it either way.

Well on mine I have the slip in type pistol grip on my Duster. And it slid right in. There are these spacers on each side inside the shifter that locks it in. I've seen people drill thru and put bolts across the shifter, spacers. Two holes upper and lower to hold the handle in place. Either way...
