    basic electronics question

Great you got it going! Some of what I wrote without seeing complete schematic was wrong. There is no active fault protection that I can see. The mosfet may blow if upper and lower mosfets turn full on at same time, basically a short on power supply. A transient or instability may cause that...

Wish you the best. Recent work experience is helpful, in finding next one, and often better. It doesn't hurt to find another, when the end is near.

    basic electronics question

I'm good. I baby sit, and neck deep in remodeling of wife's sewing room. Haven't worked with electronics for a couple years. Grandson is very smart, he has an interest in electronics. It's all good.

    basic electronics question

R53 is likely sensor part of a current limit for Q6. The clip of schematic is not enough for me to get full understanding. Typically in a single low side switch, a source resistor is viewed by a base to emmiter if a small bjt, and the collector pulls fet gate low, for off when Vbe is about...

    Effn "hardware stores"

There used to be McGee Radio, I learned much about electronics reading the catalog. I do not seem to have problems on McMaster site, I use Chrome on W7 PC, and free Android app on tablet.

    Effn "hardware stores"

I buy from mcmaster-carr. Delivery is fast, great assortment of machine tools, raw materials and fasteners. The stuff is well documented, so know specs on what you get. McMaster-Carr

    Split lock washers do nothing?

Most everything has application and design limits. Things like operating temperature range, associated material hardness, and torque range. If they are from China, who knows. They also wear out with reuse, or break and need to be changed out, bolts and nuts too. Fastening is a science.

    Old school timing light

That Sears light has transistors in a circuit to alternate the driving of the transformer. About 45 years ago I built my own for about $10, using RadioShack parts. Back at that time there were cheap neon lights, I used the focus lens from a broken one of those.

    Old school timing light

If you hear the buzz, that is good, the vibrator is mechanically working. The contacts could be worn, but the most likely failure due to age would be the capacitors. I am guessing the high voltage capacitor used for the flash energy is in the handle, that might be C1 in 67Dart273...

Has anyone built their own rod balancer?

I might be crazy, or eccentric, but in balance. :) Balance, head CC work, along with a decent ignition, results in rotary like rev performance. A rev limiter saves the day. Not much loss of time, I work while watching movies with the wife. She does fiber arts like weaving or spinning. We are...

Has anyone built their own rod balancer?

I played with it some. I used a triple beam balance with resolution of 0.1g. I used knife edge on big end at cap joint. It is a bunch of trial and error to get geometry and friction and sticktion under control to achieve repeatable readings. My results are very good, but I work with...

    Timing light

It is possible, I see engine timing in my car, and how many degrees by RPM and vacuum. I did not buy it, I made it myself.

Starting to rebuild the Allen distributor machine

Strobe tubes are Xenon. They come in different sizes. The energy source is often a voltage booster that charges a capacitor that is quickly discharged at flash, being triggered by the ignition. The tube must be matched to the charge voltage, and capacity to have the correct discharge...

    Welder gave out on me.

Most of the controls are likely on the primary side of transformer. There is a high frequency that rides on top. But even without that it should burn rod. There may be a bad connection, likely on the output, since it is weak on all settings. There might be an inductor on the output. I can do...

    Welder gave out on me.

I am good with electronics. If you can take some good pictures and provide the schematic I can help with trouble shooting the basics. Components have changed some for the better, so we can find substitutes and make it work. By turning it on I assume the fan works, but something in the power...

    Sharp'inun twist drills

A 1 inch vertical band sander works for me. The grinding is is where I can see, and use the table to brace hands some. A band sander seems to take heat away better than a stone grinder. It is about getting the sides equal and the advance correct for the material drilled. I started...

    Variable speed pedal control?

I assume the rotary tool has a universal motor? That is a series field brush motor, like is used on a electric drills, vacuum cleaner and leaf blowers, powered by AC. There are triac, solid state speed phase based controls, that work in a similar fashion to light dimmers. Light dimmers are...

Just some handy welding videos for MIG

My dad was pipefitter and a great welder. He said his secret was the ability to see the metal and the slag. He could work the slag out for void free welds, still keeping a nice pattern. He did all kinds of welding, even nuclear. I never got the chance to learn. I do some torch welding, that is...

    recommendation on 4-post lift

I have an original 22 year old auto-lifter. Very happy with it. It was US made, but they went out with Chinese competition. The Greg Smith is very close in design, a knock off. I think I paid $2300 delivered with drip pans, jack bridge, casters, jack lever, and chocks. The 1/4" steel...

    Hydraulic Press safety questions

I had an accident with a 12 ton HF. I was using it to press in the ball joint on a VW Beetle control arm. A cast iron work plate that came with the press, split and the jack popped out of the retainer. The jack went 12' past my right shoulder, bounced up and damaged a car door. The jack...

    Compressor tank cleaning

It could be treated like a fuel tank. Water, 10% muriatic solution to remove rust, neutralize with baking soda water. Rinse, dry ... not sure how. Then use Glyptal 1201. Pour in rotate. The Glyptal is expensive, but holds up well.

    cheap OB2 scanners??

The cheap ones that are based on the ELM327 chip work for getting codes. They are Chinese knock off. There is Bluetooth one from Vgate for about $20, it has an on-off switch, so can be left connected at connector without battery discharge. I use one with my phone and tablet, with Torque app...

    Looking for a lift!!!

I like 4 post, with movable jack bridge. It is good for suspension work. I can jack from ramps, replace parts, then remove jacks and tighten bushings. The bridge is very handy for support and jacking where needed. The open area between the ramps is good for doing exhaust and drive shaft work...

    drilling a "square" hole...really!

As a kid I worked in a factory machine shop. I used a square drill that drilled and broached a square hole, in one operation using a drill press. It worked well and was simpler.

    air comp motor went out

Does the motor have a camel hump on two on the top? They are starting capacitors. It could be a blown starting capacitor. They are cheap compared to a motor.

    Spray Chrome

I always thought shiny coatings on plastic were done using "sputter deposition" using aluminum. I am thinking examples like shiny aluminized mylar birthday balloons and fancy wrapping paper.
