    Timing scope

Just look at coil primary voltage signal, clamp on #1 trigger shows 720 degree reference, VR probe shows TDC. On scope, without looking to light on pulley, it is possible to measure timing, and verify for each cylinder. With portable scope, do it on the run, with help. I use similar...

    Timing scope

I think a variable reluctance probe was inserted in the tube, it picks up a narrow notch in the pulley at TDC. A VR probe is a coil on a slug with a bias magnet, when the notch is encountered a pulse is generated. The pulse would be used to trigger scope, then the 6 cylinders could be viewed...

    MSD Garage door tango??

If you want to soup up that radio, strip the wood off the lead and use fine copper strand to tie to safety pin. It reduces the resistive loss. Also add a tuning cap in parallel with coil to get a better balance of LC. Instead if hooking antenna directly, couple with turns as transformer...

    MSD Garage door tango??

It is unlikely that the problem is at the manual switch, because it typically engages the relay coil, and that takes more current than would get there remotely by RF. If the wires to the switch are acting as antenna, for remote receiver, then the fix of capacitor by Darthomas may not work...

Can't get timing dialed back to tdc

I seem to remember that it is possible to adjust the bottom bolt, if you are good with working with tools by feel. I was suggesting that you check that the TDC is when piston is at top. There are piston stops to check that. Google that.

Can't get timing dialed back to tdc

To replace the dashpot, best to have distributor out, two screws and fit end into advance plate. It has been 35+ years since I have done that, not sure. If you count the teeth, the total is 720 degrees at crank. Just checked, 13 teeth, so about 55 degrees, that is a bit much. Working on a \6...

Can't get timing dialed back to tdc

I think the mount has two slots and bolts, one on block, the other on bottom of distributor. The one on the bottom is out of sight. The other option is pull distributor and change the drive gear index by a tooth. You might want to check if TDC is correct at balancer.

Tech info wanted; Lean Burn Dist

Bill, You are very welcome. Ask if you need help. I am here for that. You will need to move pickup. If it seems to run, the polarity is reversed. Like Del says if the wires are switched, the trigger point is in between teeth, and is not well defined, timing will jump all over the place. If...

Tech info wanted; Lean Burn Dist

In post #26 I show the waveforms for a V8, the 6 should have similar timing. When a reluctor tooth is lined up with the pick-up nub the waveform is at the zero point, and is going on a slanted diagonal path low to high, left to right. The ignition trigger point is slightly above the zero...

Tech info wanted; Lean Burn Dist

Since you do not have a scope, the timing light with two boxes will work. I do not have a dual pickup 6 distributor, the info above suggests 50 degrees advance or 40 retard at crank, for v8. The 50 degree advance window is above the base timing set by primary pickup. The LB control measures...

Tech info wanted; Lean Burn Dist

Crank degrees is 2x distributor degrees. The distributor moves 1 revolution for 2 crank revolutions. This scope picture was done long ago. This is for V8 not 6. I think the bottom trace is the primary pickup, the upper is the secondary. In the lower the zero crossings are a cylinder apart...

Need slant heads for OHC project

You are correct on that! A good fix is to run a log manifold, and add a turbo with a bump in hood. :) Just dreaming.

Need slant heads for OHC project

If you want ideas for OHC cam 6 consider a straight BMW 6 1968+. It is a slanted engine with overhead cam, aluminum head. Intake is on drivers side, exhaust on passenger side. Good power and great economy 30+ with 1985 2.7L eta. Who knows, with work it might be possible to swap head, or use...

No spark- what am I missing?

Oil or grease on points can keep them from making good contact. Pull a piece of clean paper through them, closed. Check resistance from ground to point lead, not connected to coil. It should read very close to zero points closed, infinity with points open.

No spark- what am I missing?

Do you have good ground at distributor plate? Does rotor spin with engine?

    2bbl spacers??

An alternative to a carb base spacer, is a top spacer below the air cleaner. I have found significant increase using a 2" spacer, on a Weber progressive on a brand X engine. It has to do with straight entry of air in carb throat.

    How long is a slant?

It might be possible to make the custom wheel for the distributor, it would have twice the teeth, and two missing teeth. 72-2 @180 deg. So the waste fire operation would work, where it emulate two crank turns, per single distributor rotation. I have done similar using 2.2L mopar Hall...

    225 holley 1bbl flooding

If the float is what looks like brown foam, it can absorb gas, get heavy, and not work correctly. I recently replaced a nitrophyl float in a Holley 2280 that lasted less than a year. The weight of the removed float, was a gram heavy. While the float was adjusted properly, the engine ran rich...

Ultimate daily-driver Gen II A Body to build

Better get Pishta in a hurry, he is working on EFI/Electronic advance. Once that is done, one often forgets about carbs and mechanical advance. :)

    Fuel Economy..?

Back in the early to mid 70's I consistently got low 20's to as high as 25 mpg on a long trip. The car was a very plain 66 Coronet with a s6 and 3 on the tree, holley 1920. It was well worn, paid $360. That was back in the day of good gas, 75 mph speed limit, fewer stop lights. I lost a...

    Spark Scatter

    Bill, Excellent thought!

    Spark Scatter

I found long ago that side load in the distributor gear wears the busings on a slant 6 distributors. Nylon gears also drop teeth. Since you find the error 3 cylinders apart, that follows 1/2 turn of distributor. I would follow the suggestions for investigating play, or other faults in distributor

    Spark Scatter

Not sure, but looking at the first picture the coil to cap wire takes a sharp bend near heater hose, may be stressed, and failed resistive conductor. If you have a spare, try changing it out for test.

    EFI Bung in head update

Bill is correct, the missing tooth is much ahead of TDC, there is much to, things like dwell for spark. It is often placed where the gap it is not encountered in timing measurements. The first rise after the missing tooth is the sync. As a side note. The way the gap is sensed if fairly...

    EFI Bung in head update

Nice work! I could not see, but I assume the timing wheel has a missing tooth reference? The other option is additional cam or distributor sensor, for sequential EFI, and COP ignition.

That will help me diagnose the rs232 problem. Perhaps they are using handshake wires too. When you get loopback garbage is that on the PC end with 2 and 3 connected on the other end? If that happens without cable at PC end, it is serial port problem. Other wise, the hard to read pin...

Removing the gasket from spark plugs?

The CAT5 is twisted pairs. Use two pairs, and double the grounds. That will keep Rx,Tx from coupling.
