    440 popping through the exhaust...

Check for worn points or incorrect dwell. As the points wear the dwell increases & this retards the ignition timing. In a duel point ignition system it could be just 1 set of points causing it so you'll have to check them both. Another cause could be if its running too rich and gasses building...

exhaust valve size increase on J head

Your best bet would be just run a dual pattern camshaft to improve the exhaust flow. The 1.60 size valve isn't the problem, you'd get a lot more out of it by just a quick clean up around the bowls & back-cutting the valves. IMO just working the exhaust without doing the intake would be foolish...

1983 Plymouth Scamp GT - Lacking in Performance

Good tip on the O2 sensor wires! Other things to look at should be: What was the code set with the Check Engine Light? That's the 1st place to start. Next, the carbs had a rubber insulator plate that mounted the carb to the intake & they used to crack & cause vacuum leaks that would cause hard...

    67 dart emissions

I agree with most of what you say with the exception of the ignition timing. Put it on an exhaust analyzer & watch what happens. I promise you adding advance to it will not improve the HC/CO if it is already set correctly. I've been doing Emissions testing & repair as a state ceritfied...

    67 dart emissions

Maybe that's because it won't run the same way tuned for emissions as the way you had it tuned before & they didn't want to hear complaints about why it didn't run the same when you picked it up. It's pretty simple. Find out what your initial timing was at, count the # of turns the mixture...

    67 dart emissions

You guys talk about giving a mechanic $100 to make adjustments get your car to pass is a crime! If the guy is good enough to do it, has the equipment & is willing to spend the time for you to get it to pass & make you legal again he deserves to get paid! It's money well spent! It's clear to me...

Engine Cutting Out! What to check?

I was agreeing with you up until this post. The condenser doesn't generate the spark. I'ts there to help prevent the points from burning up & for noise suppression. The spark is generated in the coil when the primary field collapses & then transfers energy to the secondary side when the points...

    Are PCV needed?

Yes you need to run a PCV. The breather is desinged to allow air into the crankcase to equalize the pressure drawn by a PCV system via engine vacuum. It cannot sufficiently purge all the crankcase gasses, even in a newly rebuilt engine, therefore it needs to have the gases drawn out by the PCV...
