You might want to consider upgrading to a dual master cylinder like on the '67/up cars. If something fails, instead of a complete lack of brakes like you experienced, you would still have either front or rear brakes remaining. What happened to you is exactly the reason dual master cylinders...

With all parts, even numbers go on the right (passenger) side, odd numbers on left.

I do believe that's an aluminum block slant. Make sure you use a good coolant with a corrosion inhibitor for aluminum! Most modern name brand anti-freeze should be ok.
