318 HP Estimate (Yes I know....)

I would guess 260. Cheap headers could get you maybe 20 more I'd bet. Did you ever run a 1/4?

    Rebuild or buy new?

My only contribution here is that a 360 is externally balanced. I believe you'll need to make some changes to balance the Transmission to match it. If you are planning to race then you need to set a goal and then price out what it will take to reach the goal. ie; If you want a 10 second car in...

    new heads on old block

It's nearly impossible to give a definite answer. The old rings could be 95% left or 5% left. The better shape they are in, the less likely they are to "fail" or cause consumption or Blow-by. Thousands of people do top end rebuilds every day with no issues. Some Smoke or use oil afterwards. The...

    318 Cam advice,

Maybe a call to Hughes Engines or even Jegs or Summit tech support would be a great Idea too. I would recommend a Cam/Header/Carburetor combination. It can be a real science, but more air & Fuel in & out = more HP.

    Is this even possible???

Maybe some one on here has seen it before and will chime in with some more ideas. I would at least check the Torque first.

    Is this even possible???

I'd clean it all off again real good as stated above. Then Monitor the situation. It's not normal but anything is possible. In Theory, a cracked Head or Blown Gasket could possibly push oil through a Head Bolt. Kind of like the Perfect storm Scenario. Chances are there would be other symptoms...

    Scratched cylinder bore

Yep! If you got a real good Machine shop that you trust this is No Big Deal. It's gotta be cleaned up and then measured. Right??

    1973 318 hesitation?

If the RPM's increase but it's not accelerating then Maybe something's holding it back. Does it roll freely in neutral down a slight decline?? Torque converter or Brakes locking up could cause that. Or if the R's are increasing but nothing's holding it back then possibly the Transmission is...

    Vavle train problems

All I can say is that on My Engine, the bad Exhaust Lobe on the Cam caused the Intake Push Rod to bend...Twice. All we could figure is that since the Exhaust Valve wasn't opening due to the rounded Cam lobe. This kept all the compression in the cylinder. Then when it was time for the intake...

Did I catch it soon enough to avoid a rebuild?

What caused it to wear. Starved for oil?

    Vavle train problems

When I had it happen, The exhaust valve would not open due to the wiped out lobe, Then there was way too much pressure in the Cylinder for the Intake valve to open and the Push rod bent. It happened twice to me. Bad Exhaust lobe but the Intake Push rod is the one that bent. However it was not a...

    Vavle train problems

Might be a dumb question but is the Cam still in great shape? I know it's new. The reason I ask is because if the #1 Exhaust lobe was wiped or for some reason the Exhaust valve didn't open, Bam the Push rod will bend

71 340 crack in oil passage

Clean that ***** up with Brake clean and grind it. Then Jb weld it. If it ever starts to leak again then maybe get it pro welded. Weird place for a crack. I'd really like to see a picture or 2. Sometimes a casting mark can look like a crack. RU absolutely sure it's a leaking crack?

    crankcase evacuation?

I would have to guess that the known leak is to blame. Get The rear main sorted and retest. Sounds like your original breather setup was good except the loose fitting PCV grommet. I would fix the grommet and put the breather back in the way it all was. With the hood off, who knows where that...

    synthotic oil

I used to swear by Mobil 1. Then I put it in My '01 Jetta. I had to keep adding oil about a quart every few hundred miles. I called Mobil Tech Support and the guy on the phone was a total douche. I just wanted advice as to maybe wait a few oil changes and see if the consumption slowed down. He...

    360 No Vacuum @ Idle?

Can you get some vacuum to show by rotating the dizzy? I know you have it set but Just curious. What is your idle set at? Neutral VS. In Drive? Are you checking the vacuum hose that originally went to Vacuum advance?

    valve cover leak

Roy, I know it seems like we're getting off topic and arguing about unrelated topics. Sorry for that! My intent is to help you get your oil leak fixed. I can't see exactly what you got but some say Grinding is the answer. That would be my last resort. I believe the Right Stuff would work if...

    valve cover leak

I like this stuff in certain situations. Not in this case because the Engines already in the car. Too much chance of getting buggered up going back on. The other drawback is getting a perfectly uniform "Bead" so a thin spot could result in a leak. I honestly don't have the Patience/skill to run...

    valve cover leak

Like I said I guess you didn't read my post before saying I'm Wrong. I've installed Thousands of Valve covers the way I stated above with no comebacks.

    valve cover leak

There's way too many opinions on this subject. If you have a clearance issue and you actually have the Valve cover hitting the intake then you have to fix that. I've never seen this phenomenon in person but keep reading about people grinding their engine parts. C'mon really??? My take on all...

Do the 318's have a rear main seal?

He probably gunked it all up with some silicone sealer. Or maybe a can of that spray crap they sell on TV for fixing leaks. LOL There was this rip off shop next to My Goodyear store and one customer stood outside their shop with a sign saying how they got ripped off. It didn't take long for the...

    Remanufactured 360 with spun bearing.

I agree 100% with this. Coming from a line Tech Backround, My hands were usually tied as far as how far I could go with a rebuild. Lot's of warranty work on Ferd Truck engines and they would only let you fix what was broke. 1 Push rod, 2 valves, 1 piston, etc... Heck it may be an easier fix than...

    Remanufactured 360 with spun bearing.

It's strange that a Bearing spun in a newly rebuilt engine. First thing I'd want to know is why? Then you'd be able to decide if the other bearing's may end up doing the same thing. Did they not replace them? were they the wrong size? You get the Idea....

    Factory bored 340 vs. a bored 318

I have seen non original 340 cars go for $5,000 more than very similar 318 cars. 25 to 50 % more. The 340 has a lot of pull for buyers. IMO a lot more than $1,000 to $2,000.

    Factory bored 340 vs. a bored 318

The car with the 340 block in it will always be worth significantly more than with the 318 block in it. Unless maybe the 318 was stroked. I watch the market constantly and even 6 cyl. Bodies sell for much more with a 340 in them Vs. a 318.
