    Gear ratio decision

the height of the rear tire is going to be helpful in making a decision. The taller the tire the more gear you can run.

couple questions i should have asked before hand

Am I missing something??? That carrier sure does not look like a surgrip, track-lock, or (sic) Posi. It has every bit of appearance of an open differential. No clutches, cones, or springs only spider gears....

    727 casting numbers help

I am not a 360 pro. I'm sure someone will chime in. I do believe there is a weight on the converter for the 360. There shouldn't be any difference in the transmission otherwise.

    727 casting numbers help

I don't have any books that new. I did do a search of the part number PK4348783, and came up with this - 86 W-150 w/318 Engine. The assy date 8755 = July 17, 1985 So it is from an early 86 model.

    Cracked bell housing question

personally, I would not mess with a sloppy repair. I would find another trans core. Take both, your new and broken one, to a transmission shop. Have them swap the guts, freshen it up and reseal. Most will bench one for around here $3-400 with good parts, If it is a numbers case just save it.

Axle size from Broadcast sheet numbers

Axle 2 is code 37(2) 2.93 ratio. 156 is likely a component code for an axle assembly should be a 7.25 differential. The bearing part number 2421349 only lists one option.

Another question about 8 3/4 rear ends

I think you'll be fine with any of them. 741 was short sold on an old wives tale years ago that is still believed today. I think you'll be more likely to break something different than a 1-3/8 heat treated solid steel pinion.

    489 housings date codes

The only thing I can guess - one is an early casting the other later. There are even clear differences in the cast. Possibly the one believed to be a 71 was a replacement, warranty maybe? I can not make out the forge/vendor mark on both, right of 489 numbers one is a diamond the other is in a...

19-48-50 are bushings that go into the upper and lower support brackets. I'll take some pic's of the lower pieces tomorrow for you. It should give you a better idea of assembly with the confusion of the manual picture.

Replacing the inner seal on speedometer housing

I just use a pick to remove the seal and clip. The clip has little to no tension on it and it all comes right apart. Seat the new seal with your finger and bottom it out evenly w/small screw driver, re-install clip and seat lightly against seal.
