Timing Chain Cover crankshaft opening is the wrong size

Just for future info....the early cover started in 1959 and was used up until early 1968 in poly 318's, LA 318's, 273's and 340's. They used a bolt-on timing mark that bolted to the lower water pump bolts and was ignition timed on the passenger side (for LHD cars ) Late in '68 and in '69...

Will a 77 Charger 360 fit in a 65 Valiant Slant Six Painlessly?

Sell off the extra stuff to help fund your build.

Will a 77 Charger 360 fit in a 65 Valiant Slant Six Painlessly?

Who cares if it has all your conversion parts. You don't need the body, just the drivetrain and misc other stuff.

Will a 77 Charger 360 fit in a 65 Valiant Slant Six Painlessly?

Looks like it's actually a '64, but, same V8 changeover parts will work. I can't seem to link it for some reason. Just look up Los Angeles Craig's list and enter '64 Valiant in the search box.

Will a 77 Charger 360 fit in a 65 Valiant Slant Six Painlessly?

There's a '65 A-body V8 car for sale in Los Angeles area (Canoga Park) for only $2k. Do yourself a favor and get that for a conversion donor rather than the '77 Charger, unless you really want the later 360 drivetrain. A '65 273 car will have all the parts you need to do a much less painful...

1980 360 La oil pump pickup tube install

You might want to use some anti-seize compound on the pickup tube threads, but, it isn't required. It's pipe thread, so, self sealing.

My 273 turned out to be a 318...what did I buy?

Power steering with chassis headers.....that has to be a tight fit! I'd get rid of that plastic fire-waiting-to-happen fuel filter too while you're revamping that fuel delivery system.

    1974 340?

Forged 318 crank. No hole in the front and rear counterweight. Internal balancer too.

    Rear main seal

You could with the old rope seal. Not so easy with the neoprene ones.

    1974 340?

It's a 318 block casting. No way they would make a 340 out of it. They would use the 340 block casting.

318 block. Someone's dorked around with the stampings and casting numbers.

    64 barracuda 273

The OP's car is said to be a '64 Barracuda, but, I'm guessing you were referring to Jeff's 67. If so, he stated that his has ported J heads on it. My impression is that the OP has access to a '67 273 BBL intake and was considering using it with later heads than what his '64 has. If I'm mistaken...

    64 barracuda 273

As has been mentioned so far.......what is the purpose of this car? Cruiser? Drag racer? Pro Street? What rear axle gear are you running? If you still have the stock 7 1/4 rear, it's not suitable for ANY increase in horsepower. The stock 9" brakes aren't either. Which transmission, as there may...

    water pump

Yup, post photos of your old pump and the new one. There are a couple of different LOOKING impellers, but, they should work the same unless this is some oddball marine or industrial application. Some impellers are just a simple stamped steel one whereas there are some cast iron ones out there...

Are all 273 V8's the same?

'67 273's still have the small hole. '68 is when both 273 and slant 6's went to the large hole. The only exception to this is in A100 vans and pickups. They all had the large hole for the 727.

Are all 273 V8's the same?

Are you referring to adapting a later large hole crank to accept a small button converter? If so, yes, those are available, but I can't remember who sells them. If you're referring to an early 273 crank that isn't machined for a manual trans pilot bushing, Brewer's has a BEARING assy to do that.

    Small block engine mount question

I haven't run across problems with the '67-up manifolds. It's the '64-6 LH exhaust manifold that can have an interference problem at the #7 exhaust port on a smog head. Some castings are worse than others, but, some can be ground to gain the clearance you need. It's easier to just space the...

Stamping on 340 in 72 Duster?

That looks like head gasket residue. Is that actually stamped into the block? The number and letter look backwards. I don't remember ever seeing any stamps that would do that.

    WHAT IS THIS??

Flushed many blocks over the years. Incredibly messy job! I don't envy you a bit! Do it outside on grass or gravel if you can. It can sure stain concrete and asphalt.
