sounds like a vacuum leak to me. Had a 72 that did that and would also fall on its face if you didnt power brake it in gear and feather the pedal. timing was right, carb was rebuilt. had an exhaust leak and I think the intake had a crack that I never could find. Ran and idled decent all day long.
