What's everyone using to prep an aluminum manifold for paint?

Wish I had one a while back. I broke the one I had, bend it all to hell trying to get the drum off. The car was off the road so I couldn't drive it with the loose nut. Ended up having to be torched off, cut off not heated. What did it cost you?

I was referring to Permatex gasket remover during disassembly to minimize scraping off gaskets.

I'm going to start up an old hobby of rebuilding carburetors. I've been using Permatex foaming action gasket remover. Any idea on something cheaper to use, this stuff is quite expensive? Do you rely on your carburetor cleaner to remove excess gasket material that's tough to come off without a...
