back in the '70's those claimed mpg used the EPA rating which was calculated by a different method than they use today. No one got 36 mpg.

    Damsel in distress

^^^^^ get a battery terminal cleaner, it's a little gadget that has wire bristles, from the auto parts store. Also ask for a wire brush for cleaning those other connections Geoff mentions.

How much does it cost to rebuild a Slant 6

I can't give any tech advice but my $.02 take things one at a time and figure out what's really going on, you may very well not need a rebuild. Keep your Valiant no matter what, if not you will regret it, it is sweet and you won't find a better car out there.

    Why the /6

Excellent thread! I'm interested to hear all the reasons. For me: Mom's '66 Valiant drove the distance to the moon and partway back before a careless driver hit the car. Inline 6's have an even firing order so they are smooth. They are simple to work on. I still remember the first time my...

    When hardened valve seats production??

http://www.forabodiesonly.com/mopar/showthread.php?t=162033 1973 or maybe before, according to this thread. Personally over the years I stopped worrying about it because all my Mopars seemed to do just fine on unleaded.

    Anti Freeze turned brown.

Coincidentally this came up for me just the other day. I have been religious about changing the coolant in my Crown Vic every two years, but when I had a problem recently the coolant was very brown and I was worried. From what I understand this happens when engines get old if you don't flush...

    Just had to share

I really like the T-shirt. It goes in the special category of shirts you only wear once in a while because you want to keep it nice. A very good and thoughtful friend you have.

The Secret is in the Slant!

That's so cool. As far as the horsepower part I remember my Dad taking our new '66 Valiant out on the open highway and saying 'this car is a bomb!' I had never heard that expression before.

    I could use your opinion

You already have 4k miles of good service and memories out of the 170, I say go ahead and change things up and put in the 225 since you have a good one lined up. It will be a fun project and I for one will enjoy watching it happen.
