Bad machine work or am i over looking something?

did you set the thrust before checking? Meaning snug up all the mains (not much more than hand tight), take a dead blow hammer (or any other non maring hammer), and hit the crank front and back. Then torque the mains and check for thrust clearance. If its still tight, sanding the bearings...

looks like im pulling the motor apart already

Sounds like its a timing and carb issue. Are you letting it just idle for a while? the water is probably condensation IF you are not loosing any coolant.

What heads would be best for a 97 (360) 408 mag stroker??

The cast iron is very easy to drill, but I can understand if people are afraid to drill it out

    74 318 crankshaft

another thing to remember is if you're gonna idle it for long periods of time, throw a fan in front of the radiator and force some air through it.

    74 318 crankshaft

sounds like it may just be a stuck closed tstat. I like the stant brand, but as long as you test it before any will do. Also wouldn't hurt to drill two 1/8" holes in the disc of the tstat to help with getting all the air out.

What heads would be best for a 97 (360) 408 mag stroker??

a .090 over 318...stay clear of that grenade

    74 318 crankshaft

What thermostat did you put in it? Could it possibly be stuck closed? I always check mine on the stove before they ever make it onto an engine. What about the carb? What size and any idea on the jets? Sorry for all the basic questions, but thats usually what the issue is. I'm pulling for ya...

What heads would be best for a 97 (360) 408 mag stroker??

I personally am a big fan of roller cams. I would have used that block also. The drilling is a pretty straight forward thing. Its just 1 hole drilled through the deck on either side. We've done it a couple times at the shop I work at.

What heads would be best for a 97 (360) 408 mag stroker??

You could always have the block drilled to use the LA styled edelbrocks. A competent machine shop should be able to handle drilling the 1 hole in each deck surface

    74 318 crankshaft

Another stupid question, but did you happen to check it against another gauge?

    74 318 crankshaft

There's no chance that you accidentally put a magnum timing cover on it, is there?
  22. lucky13

    74 318 crankshaft

with the stroker do you fire it up for only a few minutes at a time and then shut it off? Are you sure its coolant and not just condensation?
  23. lucky13

    74 318 crankshaft

Any idea where the coolant is coming from? Could be something as simple as the intake is loose or not sealed properly
  24. lucky13

    74 318 crankshaft

90% of aftermarket cranks are internally balanced. Your 318 will be also. You cam use the same flywheeel on both engines. Do you have a pic of the crank flange on the 318? Then we can tell if its drilled for the pilot bushing or not. Most were, at least all the stockers that i've had in my...

    new CNC ported aluminum heads

I hadn't seen a set at all, yet. But the set that you posted (ebay link), appear to have heli-coils in the intake and exhaust (can't really tell about the rockers). Do you think that the seller is putting the heli-coils in himself? Not trying to be argumentative at all, just kinda thinking...

    New Heads!

The EQ's are just the old Pro-action/topline heads (thats why they're cast in australia), Same part numbers and everything, I've had a set of the CH318A's for almost 10 years. EQ bought the cores a couple years ago after Pro-Action claimed bankruptcy
