We've just put together a 383 out to 438 using a forged 69 440 crank and 60 over. Its only a mild build as a cruiser in a C body. Compression is 10.3 and cam is Comp HiEnergy 274H. I'm thinking it'll be around 400hp.Maybe 420. We used stock 440 source heads with comp retainers and locks.

That's not entirely true. You can still go quick with inferior cheap parts. It just doesn't last long. Sort of backs up the old saying. 1.Cheap 2.Fast 3.Reliable You can only pick two!!!

Mate in western australia had one at 900hp without ally caps and it only lasted one or two meetings.

I did mine with a motor plate but made the plate to take nolathane upper control arm bushes.

Could it actually be tranny fluid in the radiator? Not that uncommon if the tranny cooler lines still run through the rad.

I've bored a 383 to take a 2nd hand set of 440 pistons before with no problems. Could widen your options for pistons.
