How to get 400 hp out of 1971 340 .30 over

Now I know what my parents meant when they said they wish they could the. The clocks back to when I was just a baby/kid. My oldest is about to turn 30. My youngest recent joined the USAF. He’s no longer just a big boy! When they were small, they were a tough job but the best job to ever have.

How to get 400 hp out of 1971 340 .30 over

The one place I’d argue is that, where do you find a stock as delivered 340 from ‘71 & down with the high compression pistons till running around today in good shape? I think it’s a load of bologna because (IMO!) they all need to be rebuilt.

How to get 400 hp out of 1971 340 .30 over

LOL, well, the cylinder heads being as they were for the day did t flow very well and the intake was OK and just fine for the daily driver duties it was designed to do but, WOW! Imagine what a LD-340 on top would have done with a better head. Alas….. the factory has to do things on the cheap...

How to get 400 hp out of 1971 340 .30 over

100% correct! Mo-Power is better…. LOL Ye that’s a little bit of a spirited driver. Would this and… And this also be a tire size dependent issue? How do you calculate 40mph & 67mph w/3.73 gear? At what RPM & tire size. The OP didn’t give the tire size and you didn’t give the RPM @ which...

How to get 400 hp out of 1971 340 .30 over

For certain! Find another engine builder. It’s NOT hard. Not at all, not one bit. He’s full of sh#%!!! Edelbrock has there “Power Package” using there parts. The 330 used in there testing using all of there parts made 417hp. I went to the Edelbrock web site and copied this below. All you need...

That’s possible. Here’s why…. Probably not likely, but cams can be ground with a smaller or larger base circle than what cam as stock. Even if it is ground on the proper diameter base circle, the new lifters can have a seat height difference. There was over .100 between my MP solid lifters and...

I ran that same basic spec Thumper in my son’s 10-1, 360 in his ‘91 4spd pick up truck. It was good. I liked it. He loved it.

Yes but I’d run the RPM & ether bowl port the head or look at a set of new cylinder heads. The cylinder head can benefit from a little work. Valve job/bowl work. After that, an aluminum head may prove to be better and cheaper. You didn’t mention what size Thumper. Just the small one. The...

    Comp cam

Unfortunately, that leaves only places like Hughesengines, AR engineering, FBO @ 4secondsflat.com, TTI & a few others places. When it comes to camshafts (and other major parts,) Chrysler isn’t the first one to be thought about. The hottest sellers are.

    Comp cam

Comp can give you .904 specific lobes if you request them. This is not a problem. Seldom do I see a need to make an attempt and actually take max advantage of the larger diameter.

    Comp cam

No, don’t be worried. Here’s why and what your going to do. After installing the cam, rotate the cam and check for a smooth rotation. If it is t smooth, fix the problem. Install each lifter one at a time heavily lubed in the oil you’re going to run. Check for the lifters ease in two motions...

    Magnum 360 crank balancer

If the crank is using a neutral balance at the rear, the front can be ether zero or external balance. It’s up to the flex plate to keep the external balance or be set for a zero balance converter. My 5.9 is external balance. Stock balancer up front with a B&M flex plate for a neutral converter.

    Magnum 360 crank balancer

If you’re going to leave it an external balance engine, the stock one is fine for general performance. It’ll handle street strip duties just fine. If you’re internal balancing the engine, a Fluid damper is about the best there is. Also. TCI Rattler is excellent. You can get cheaper SFI...

Feel like 360 should have more power

He don’t know anything about the cam but I as well suspected this. The previous owner could have slid something in. His cylinder psi report (something 99% here don’t know or do) is pretty low but also pretty equal across the board. I’m thinking this is a dead stock engine with bolt on parts...

Feel like 360 should have more power

OK cool. Once you grab your dial back timing light, see where that initial is set at. You’ll probably find more power when you can advance the initial a good bit. For a small cost, A - FBO distributor timing limiting plate can be purchased and installed. This will allow maximum initial timing...
