Rear end gear question? 3:23's OK

experience with a 400hp 360... went from 3.91 to 2.94 rear, the 2.94 is way friendlier for cruising but it was significantly more fun with the 3.91... I will likely settle in at 3.23

    Large U Joint question

Thanks guys, as I won't be doing this often at all I will probably just swap the u joints back and forth with the chunks. Thanks again!

    Large U Joint question

I have 3 chunks 2 are 489 with the big u joint, the 68 barracuda I just picked up is a stock 741. The only reason I would swap is to put the 391 gear/ Detroit locker in for the occasional track run. So I think an adapter u joint might be the way to go

    Large U Joint question

If this is considered a dumb question I apologize. Rear axles is my weakest point of knowledge. What has to happen to use a large u joint for an 8 3/4"? I have 1 car that came with it done on an 8 3/4 and one that is the factory small u joint. I'd like to be able to switch the center chunks...

    What's second best to 8 3/4?

The affordable is all relevant, if you go 8 1/4 you change your bolt pattern, so then you need new wheels and maybe new rubber, however if you need those anyway then maybe it's fine, however then you have 2 different bolt patterns on your car so you will want to put LBP front discs on it. Going...

do I need an additive in my 8 3/4 sure grip?

off topic sorry but had to ask, was looking at your restoration page. What size wheels and tires are you using? are they factory 5.5 steel wheels? what size rubber? I am getting ready to put new tires on mine and like the way yours fill the wheel well.

    8.25 Carrier Question

Yes but there is threshold where I believe the carrier size changes. I believe it's 2:76 but if you do a search for 8 1/4 carrier on this forum you can confirm that size.

    Rear End

It seems like you have a good car fund going so you may as well go 8 3/4". If you're going disc all the way around I would recommend going large bolt pattern to give infinite wheel options

    Rear End

And if you start looking for something bigger you will need an 8 3/4 with sbp or else do a lbp conversion

    Applications to find an A-500?

not to jack the thread but I have a 65 I'm getting ready to do this too. The 46 is equivalent to the 518 correct? And do you simply have 1 switch that controls both LU and OD?

    42RH / A-500 in a Duster with pictures.

I plan on doing this when I am doing body work anyway so I am certain it won't go to plan. My next question is will this trans with the stock converter bolt right up to a 69 318?

switching from 904 to a A500 or A518, anyone done this?

What do your RPM's look on highway?

65 with a 904. I imagine it cannot be too different as I can bolt up a different years 904 as long as I change from cable shift. If anyone here knows feel free to shout it out.

    65 Trans/Drive Shaft help

sorry I meant an aftermarket electric sending unit that comes with the speedo. It says it fits most mopars which is why I'm curious if the speedo cables differed in things other then length ? That being said since a later column won't swap will the later trans shift linkage connect properly...

    65 Trans/Drive Shaft help

I have a 65 Dart 273/904 factory setup. I am mapping and acquiring parts for my build and need some help. I am dropping in a 69 318 and going to LBP with an 8 1/4" rear. gear ratios

You can get the bigger gears... I had a 3.90 for a 7 1/4, either way if your just cruising go with a 2.94 or a 3.23. I have a 2.94 and can still break the tires loose! I'll be switching to a 3.23 or 3.55 eventually though as I live in a metro area and don't often get a above 50-55

    Ditch the ball and trunnion

Anybody have any experience with losing the ball and trunnion on an early a and replacing it with a standard yoke and universal joint setup? Can it be done fairly easily and will my current trans work with it? Right now it's all original 65 with a 273 and 904. Tried to google it and didn't find...

    7 1/4 suregrip

You will get a lot of people who will tell you its junk or why bother. Realistically you can get around $200-$250 depending on condition. I got a nice clutch style one on here for less then that but it was one heck of a deal.

    What can a 7 1/4 rear take???

You can put any 7 1/4 gear in a 7 1/4 rear, and yes there is a 3.23 ring gear. If you are asking what I think you are asking gears are not interchangeable unless they are from the same size rear end, meaning an 8 1/4 ring gear is not comparable with a 7 1/4.

    What can a 7 1/4 rear take???

I wouldn't worry about fixing a 7 1/4 if you bust one they are EVERYWHERE and typically very cheap.
