    Your set up is very similar to the one I was running. My 383 had the original flat tops (no valve reliefs) and a .501 hydraulic cam. I added some 84cc Eddy heads, swapped out the cam to a crane solid .540/.560 lift. I trusted a friend(?) when said there was no need to clay it to check for...

    sludge removal

    Definately, NO sand blasting! The sand will get everywhere and eventually destroy the engine. Try using kerosene. It's an excellent cleaner and cheap too. You can power wash it afterwards, but give it a coat of oil or WD-40 to prevent rust from forming.

    Start with the basics - you need air, fuel, and spark for a motor to run. Go through them one at a time and make sure you have all three. Next, look at the timing of the events. Does it cough, sputter, backfire? Did you change or adjust anything else?

    I'd put the copper coat on - cheap insurance. I just put my new heads on using the Cometic MLS gaskets - real nice.

    Cast or Forged?

    That's what I was afraid of. I'm gonna try and track down the guy I bought the engine from and see if he ever changed the pistons. He used it as a back-up motor. Thanks. Dan.

    Cast or Forged?

    My engine is a 383 made in 1969. Can someone tell me if the stock pistons were cast or forged. I wanna get into the 11's and am thinking about adding some juice.

    I've heard of multi-angle valve jobs, but that's one angle I think you'd be better off without! :lol:
