Anyone with Dana 60 running "highway" gear ratio?

3.55 is the closest to a highway gear I have seen in a Dana 60

    Dana 70

Rob I was just sharing my experience on how to pick up a used Dana and what to look for to keep the conversion cost down. Mentioning the weight is something a person should know so they can decide where they want to spend their axle dollars because it is not cheap even if you start with a free...

    Dana 70

This is a car Dana. You can see how much lighter the housing is than the 60HD in the photo above. Notice the extra web around the entire flange and going forward to the pinion. The car axles have lighter tubes also but the truck tubes will be fine on the cheap. Best to start with a 60 though if...

    Dana 70

The thing you got going for you when looking for a Dana axle is they are not rare. They are so common If one doesn't have a track lok, power lok or Detroit locker I won't give them a second glance even at scrap price unless it has a gear with the ratio I wish to use. That's because the limited...

    Dana 70

It takes some of the same internals as a 60 but the housing is much heavier and larger. Tubes are larger and the wrong size. Probably could trade a truck guy for a 60 that would be a better choice to do the conversion.

    Sure grip or Dana??

You need to confirm your power loc unit is made for your particular 8.75 case. Use your case#. 489 or ? Order power loc clutches sized for it if it is a match to your case.

    Sure grip or Dana??

The ones you have pictured are for the power loc. Track loc's have 2 locating tabs rather than 4. Is this power loc for a Dana 60?

What you have there is a power loc. They also made other types. Track loc, Detroit locker, ect.....

    Burnt shifter cable today

When I was a kid living on a farm I did a repair on a melted shifter cable with a piece of scrap copper tubing. Split it and pinch/closed it over the burnt section. No more problem. Didn't even have to reroute away from header. It was a no money fix. Suited me fine at the time.

Rust does look bad, clean it well before pushing into side gear.

    Axle shaft broke 8 3/4

I understand the concern with the axle shaft being run on the opposite side. A valid point but I would put it together with what you have. Some times you gotta make do how ya can with what ya got. Just be cautious with it till it earns your confidence. At least he's not wanting to balewire a...

Odd. Never seen that before. I wouldn't worry about it doing that again.

I'd use the spare you already have in storage.

    Axle shaft broke 8 3/4

Probably lost the bearing first then the axle shaft. You may be able to wash the metal out of it and get an axle and new bearings if the gears still look good. Its gotten hard to find 8 3/4s in my neck of the woods. Their a bit light duty for a 4x4 also in my opinion. Used 9 1/4s are still...

Tapered roller bearings or ball bearings?
  18. ssba

    What's second best to 8 3/4?

Since ford axle is out of the question I would be looking for an 8 3/4 from a truck or c-body and narrow it. The axle shafts can be shortened & resplined and use the stock bearings and brakes. I wouldn't want a c-clip axle in a circle track car myself. Tapered bearings for handling the side...

    Dana 60 docdiff axles

You have the newer style of green bearings with the loose ring. The snap ring keeps the bearing in the housing bore. There should be a "O" ring to seal the bearing to the bore. I usually put a thin smear of silicone on the "O" ring just because. The factory used a closed cell white foam...

One more rear end changeout question.

If you go with the 8 1/4 rear axle you can put 73-76 bbp disc brakes. If you go with a stock A-body 8 3/4 axle you can use the 72 back Kelsey hays sbp disc brakes. These may be the easiest but there are many ways to get where you want to be once you choose your bolt pattern.

    Looky what I found!

Never seen that one before. Usually they get more busted up than this when you have those Kerchunk sounds. In the old days it was simplest to go to the salvage yard and buy a complete replacement rear axle assembly and you were back on the road pretty cheap and fast. Today since the parts...

Its just the weight and dia. of the thicker tubes. You will also have a little grinding to do on spring perches using the heavy wall tubes. Not hard to overcome though. Bearings are the same.

why is 4.5 better than the 4 1/4

The Hemi super stocks were delivered with 4 1/2" bolt pattern. No 4" pattern wheels on them. Special hubs and wheels were used on those cars. The only reason I would use the small pattern is to keep a cars appearance original. I would use the KH 4 piston front disc even if it came with 10"...

    Posi Conversion

Seeing that you have under 40 post here and under the assumption you could be new to the world of Mopar. Posi is slang for positraction. A term used by Chevrolet to market their locking differentials. We all know what you meant as most including myself grew up using the term although...

Dana 60 but from a ford

First thing I would check for in a truck Dana is if it has a open, track loc or power loc. Removing the rear cover for a visual will reveal this. Second thing of note would be the spline of the side gears. Since your axle shafts will need to plug into these they may need to be changed to...

    rear ends to choose from?

Being a big block guy I have found the Dana's the cheapest way to go for me. Especially after breaking a few 8 3/4s. I wouldn't go as far as saying it is cheaper than some of the other options discussed above. But the Dana doesn't have to be as expensive as most think. You will have to do...
